Been waiting all summer long for this one to try. Seviin Reels new 300-size reel is now available. Good choice if you're into swimbaiting or glidebaiting for bass .... or if you're a closet pike angler like this guy is.

An optional power handle would be great on this type of reel as well.

The Z-Man Fishing Products Chatterbait Elite EVO Tungsten with fire craw Chatterspike put some dandies into the boat a short 48 hours ago.

The more I fish it, the more discoveries I make with it - I've got a lot of situations and applications with these in order to rile up smallmouths. It's a top tool for shallow sand, shallow rock, deflecting over wood, and it also helps to do this on darker tannic waters where the reduced clarity will help mask the hardware.

The tungsten model can also be fished slowly along bottom too - painfully slow retrieves. If the head ain't grinding, and your reel isn't making 1 revolution for every two seconds, you aren't working it slow enough. That was this weekend's cold front requirement as all hits (extremely light) were on the slowest possible speed whilst keeping it moving.

Mid-September Updates -

1) September bass class posted to website. Had time for 2 for now. More to come possibly. But just know that September and October fishing has become habitual and repetitive, so stuff I wrote 4 years ago is still largely in play.

LAKES TO FISH AND AVOID DURING FALL TURNOVER -

This September bass class is an important lesson plan on lake selection for these next few weeks.

Every single year, we emphasize fishing ahead of turnover or behind it. And many lakes and waterbodies avoid it altogether - which get easily forgotten.

Therefore, you need to know where to go.

Always consider that not every lake turns over dramatically each year, and at the same time, or whatsoever at all. During the first weeks of October, focus on lakes and systems that do not turn over as it’ll be business as usual on them. Then if playing the game, always try to find lakes that have already completed turnover, or have yet to turn. This systemic approach to lake selection will guarantee you fishing ahead of it or behind it.

When October fishing trips bomb, the real reason things didn’t work out the way they should have was due to your lake selection failures and misidentifying - fishing where you want to, rather than basing lake selection on the progression of turnover.

TOP LURES FOR THE EARLY FALL TRANSITION -

Here's what I'm throwing these next few weeks if I had a choice -

The early fall transition’s fishing expectation is lots of searching and burning some gas. This window is short, lasting only a few weeks, and bites can change daily as a result from cooling water temps, water clarity, changing weather, timing of the migrations and importantly the status and approach of fall turnover. Most fishing strategies should be shallow(er) water casting with horizontal search lures and reaction baits to help trigger both species of bass.

Regardless of where we stand in the summer to fall seasonal transition, one or more of these scenarios should apply. Cool mornings, lots of bass relocating to the shallows and low fishing pressure creates memorable trips. Be mindful of the seasonal triggers and prioritize a few of, or all, of these search lure strategies.

FISHING ALGAE BLOOM LAKES -

Green water shortcuts to finding and catching trophy bass. Algae bloom waters are my destination for big late summer largemouths.

Clear in spring and green by late summer, algae blooms are an annual occurrence throughout the north - most common to the highly fertile and vegetation-rich flowages, drainage lakes, and eutrophic lakes. And although its stench and green color can be gross, blooms can create advantageous opportunities for the finest bass fishing of late summer.

In recent years blooms have intensified across the Northwoods and occurring with more frequency.

It can be nasty to be on lakes that are blooming. Many anglers look at these conditions and immediately talk themselves out of fishing them. But if you are on the right fisheries, find the right spots, and fish properly, blooms can produce the summer’s most consistent largemouth fishing.

Blooms are an annual occurrence from late July through August, and we use their reduced visibility to aid us when targeting big largemouths. And we often have the lake all to ourselves.

As with most bloom patterns, connect the dots between blooms and the lake’s topography and personality. The lakes that have the heaviest blooms each have expansive shallow w**d flats and are warmest and most fertile compared to lakes that don’t bloom. Most are drainage systems too. The bloom enhances fishing and helps concentrate fish in predictable locations.
