Shaah Iyo Sheeko means tea and conversation in Somali. The concept of Shaah Iyo Sheeko is people coming together to get to know one another and build a community through a guided conversation inspired by a topic. Everyone is welcome no matter their heritage, religion, sexual orientation, preferred pronoun, or political affiliation is. We are a multi-generational, diverse group of people who have chosen to build community with each other.
Our tea time started two years ago when an Elder named Khadija was a part of several conversations with some of her neighbors. Because of those interactions she decided she wanted to get to know all the people she lived around. She thought having tea and treats within a community setting would bring everyone together. Another Elder named Miski who attended the first gathering spoke of a Somali tradition of having tea and telling stories called it Shaah iyo sheeko. As a result of those two elders Shaah Iyo sheeko was born.
Shaah Iyo Sheeko was supposed to be only six weeks activity and has turned into a two years program.
Hope staff Facilitate this hour and a half process of guided conversation in a community environment. Malyun and Khusaba have supported Elder Khadija and many other community members to host their own topics. We’ve gone from mingling, to getting to know each other, to building and shaping the communities we want to be a part of.
Shaah Iyo sheeko happens every Thursday from 3:00pm to 4:30. We provide homemade shaah (spiced warm tea) sweetened to your liking as well as homemade chocolate chip cookies and fresh fruits. All refreshments are made with organic ingredients.
Elder Miski is a co-founder of “Project Self” and has been a support to our process.
She attends twice a month and is a great resource to our conversations.
