Created to Create
Lately, my kitchen has looked a little like an experiment. 🍎🍂
Fall means new flavors at the Ballstead, so I’ve been mixing, tasting, adjusting, and occasionally standing over something thinking, Well… that needs something. 😂
Pumpkin. Chai. Apples. Pecans. Cranberries. Cinnamon. 🍁
None of these ingredients are new.
But put familiar things together in a different way, and suddenly you've created something that wasn't there before.
And somewhere in the middle of all that experimenting, I started thinking about creativity.
The very first thing Scripture tells us about God is:
“In the beginning God created…” — Genesis 1:1
Before Scripture tells us He spoke to Abraham, parted the Red Sea, or performed a miracle, we're introduced to Him as Creator.
And then He created us in His image.
Maybe that's why there is something so satisfying about making things with our hands. 🤎
A loaf of bread.
A meal for our family.
A garden.
A song.
A photograph.
A quilt.
A business.
A new recipe scribbled on a flour-dusted piece of paper.
We aren't creating something from nothing the way God does. We're taking what He has already made and discovering new ways to use it.
The grain was His idea. 🌾
The apple was His idea. 🍎
The pecan, the pumpkin, the spices—all His.
I just get the joy of putting them together.
And I love that.
Sometimes we separate our faith from the ordinary work of our hands, as though serving God only happens in obviously “spiritual” moments.
But Scripture says:
“Whatever you do, do it heartily, as to the Lord…” — Colossians 3:23
So maybe creativity can be worship too.
Maybe experimenting, making, building, cooking, planting, designing, and discovering can all become little opportunities to appreciate the imagination of the One who created first.
This fall, while I'm playing with new flavors, I want to remember that I'm not just looking for the next good recipe.
I'm surrounded by ingredients that began in the imagination of God.
And I get to create with them. 🍂🌾🤎
From Grain to Grace 🌾
Created by the Creator—and given hands, minds, and imaginations to create.
