One year ago, I started Bread Winner with zero business plan and no idea how it would play out. It was all an experiment. All I had was the “knead” to make organic, high-quality bread. That means regular wheat sourdough, plus a specialty I care about deeply: gluten-free food that actually tastes good. I’m gluten-free and dairy-free myself, and I was tired of wasting time and money on bad-tasting food.
I started as a cottage bakery selling direct to consumers. From May through October, Bread Winner was part of our weekly farmers market. The warmth and support were overwhelming. We sold out every week for multiple weeks. When gluten-free customers found us, they couldn’t believe their eyes. Some even cried.
The season by the numbers:
🍞 1,600+ sourdough loaves
🌾 250 GF sourdough loaves
🥖 150 GF artisan loaves
🥧 150 GF/vegan mini fruit pies
🍫 600+ insane brownies
The numbers matter less than the people. I met countless amazing customers, friends, industry folks, and fellow home bakers. It was humbling to stand alongside farmers, cottage bakers, and crafters who showed up every single week, some traveling hours to do it. Thank you all. Special thanks to Ange Garrett, Brian Marcus, and Mercer Island Farmers Market for the amazing experience.
The market has wrapped for the season, but Bread Winner isn’t slowing down. I’ll keep selling direct to consumers, and I’ve started commercial wholesaling. If your business is looking to serve high-quality gluten-free bread, Bread Winner has you covered. Message me to talk.
Here’s to year two. 🥖
