To build a business is to become a jack of all trades. I’ve learned so much that is not even remotely related to baking through this business - it’s a scary, but ultimately healthy & rewarding step to take. If you’re juggling with turning your own art, your own baking, or your own expertise into a business - do it. Take the leap. You’ll learn so much more about yourself and what you’re capable of along the way - even if it fails or fizzles out, you’ll come out on the other side so much stronger.

I’ve been hand-lettering every box since I began this business, and just recently I tried my hand at creating a logo from scratch. I went through about a dozen options, filling up scratch paper and fiddling with illustrator until my eyes went crossed. She’s certainly not perfect - but neither is a good cake.

Our Story

I've been experimenting with baked goods since childhood Christmas cookies, when I added extra flour to the recipe on the back of the Toll House Bag and dubbed them my "secret recipe" chocolate chip cookies. Family ate the thick, doughy things as though they were the greatest dessert they had ever tasted, my eyes lighting up with each bite.

In the summer of 2016, I set out in pursuit of the "best" chocolate cake recipe, experimenting and taste-testing for weeks - much to the chagrin (and expanding waistlines) of friends and family. After 3 months of baking through the Memphis heat, I had found not only a solid chocolate cake recipe, but also a love for experimentation in baking. I set forth with a number of thoughts. What interesting, unexpected flavors could I combine? How could I introduce surprise to the comforting experience that is taking a bite of a classic cake - chocolate, red velvet, vanilla, carrot? From there, the playful, yet elegant, heart of Sadie's Cakes was born.

Today, I strive toward innovation in the oven and that surprised, satisfied first bite merging the familiar with the unexpected. Sadie's Cakes Co. combines a mastery of the classics with elevated flavors that dance around the borders of familiarity. Each cake is made from scratch with a unique flavor palette carefully curated to both nod to tradition and hint at innovation. Meanwhile, cakes come delivered with the knowledge behind them - for each cake, I research the flavors, history, and tradition, infusing my cakes not only with herbs, but with love (please, pardon the cheesy humor!). Sadie's Cakes aim to cultivate community around them - sparking conversation, evoking food memory, and creating delicious shared experiences. I can’t wait to get baking for you.
