Thank you to all of my Warm Batch customers for another great baking weekend! 🍞🤎 The new bread slicer is working like a charm, too — sliced sourdough is officially getting easier and more consistent!

I’m so grateful for every order, share, recommendation, and bit of feedback. I’ve been listening, and I’m already working on some of your ideas — so expect new things coming this week! 👀

The last Party Box of the weekend is heading out, bringing the 48-hour total to 564 cookies — plus bread, Gooey Butter Coffee Cakes, and a giant Cookie Cake! My oven is officially taking a break. 😅

Question of the day: What the heck is Gooey Butter Coffee Cake? 🍰☕🤠

Imagine if brownies and cheesecake had a buttery cousin from St. Louis — that’s Gooey Butter Coffee Cake.

It’s rich, buttery, soft, sweet, and gooey in the center with that classic powdered sugar top. The dessert originated in St. Louis around the 1930s or 1940s, and legend says it started as a happy baking accident when a German-American baker mixed up the proportions for a butter coffee cake. Instead of tossing it, they baked it — and St. Louis got one of its most famous desserts.

For us, this one is personal. We used to get Gooey Butter Cake from a bakery in the St. Louis area, but when we moved in 2014, we had to start making our own. My mom taught me how, and now our family actually prefers our homemade version.

If you love gooey, you want the middle piece. If you like it more set, go for the edges. My family prefers ours a little more “well done,” but this weekend I made them the traditional way — soft and gooey.

Going forward, I’ll offer both options:

You choose your favorite and make it your own — with coffee, milk, ice cream, or just a fork.
