Editorial: Stand Up? How About, Shut Up!!

By Jon Fetherston

--

“Stand up to Trump.”

That is the tired slogan Maine’s political class keeps dragging onto every stage, into every press release, and across every campaign ad.

Not fix Maine.
Not lower taxes.
Not make housing affordable.
Not clean up the streets.
Not restore public safety.
Not help working families survive inflation, energy costs, grocery bills, insurance hikes, and crushing property taxes.

Just this: “I stood up to Trump.”
Enough.

Shenna Bellows says she stood up to Trump.
Janet Mills says she stood up to Trump.
Now Graham Platner wants to audition for the same tired anti-Trump resistance act.
Spare us.

Bellows tried to remove Donald Trump from Maine’s ballot before voters ever had a chance to decide for themselves. She dressed it up in constitutional language, but the result was clear: one state official attempted to block Mainers from choosing a candidate for president.

Then the United States Supreme Court shut it down.
Bellows did not save democracy.
She lost.

Yet Maine Democrats still treat that failed political stunt like some badge of courage. It was not courage. It was national headline-chasing dressed up as public service.

Meanwhile, real Mainers were dealing with real problems.
Food pantry lines.

Property tax shocks.
Lewiston residents begging officials to address shootings, drugs, trash, needles, and fear in their neighborhoods.
Portland businesses watching city government make survival harder by the month.
Families choosing between groceries, heating oil, electricity, and insurance.

But go ahead. Tell us again how brave you were standing up to Trump.

Then there is Janet Mills.

Mills has built her brand around defiance. National Democrats applaud. Cable news approves. Progressive donors cheer.
But what has any of it done for Maine?

Has it lowered taxes?
No.
Made housing affordable?
No.
Fixed the state’s public safety problems?
No.
Restored trust in Augusta?
No.
Stopped young people from leaving because they cannot afford to build a life here?
No.

Under Mills, government gets bigger, spending gets higher, and working Mainers feel more ignored.

She may get applause from Washington insiders, but back home, many people are exhausted.

And now comes Graham Platner.
Platner wants to look like the next fearless warrior against Trump. But last week in Lewiston, when asked direct questions by this reporter about shootings and public safety concerns affecting Maine communities, he ducked.

No answer.
No leadership.
No courage.
Just avoidance.

That is the problem with modern politics.
Everybody wants the tough-guy campaign ad.
Everybody wants the viral clip.
Everybody wants to “stand up” when the slogan is safe, the crowd is friendly, and the cameras are flattering.

But leadership is not tested in a scripted video.
Leadership is tested when the questions are uncomfortable.
Leadership is tested when communities are hurting.
Leadership is tested when people want answers, not branding.

And too many politicians in Maine are failing that test.
Mainers are tired of slogans.
Tired of pandering.
Tired of politicians acting like cable-news activists instead of public servants.
Tired of being told that fighting Donald Trump matters more than fixing Maine.

Because while Augusta obsesses over Trump, working families are obsessing over whether they can afford groceries this week.

Whether they can keep their homes.
Whether downtowns are safe.
Whether their children will stay in Maine or leave.
That is the disconnect.

And voters see it.
Maine’s political establishment keeps shouting, “We stood up to Trump!”
Fine.

But who stood up for Maine?
