Here you go! We mentioned in an earlier post that we had fantastic shops all up and down Laneda Ave, these are just a few of our favorites. We hope you enjoy everything our sweet wee town has to offer, from our unique shops and restaurants to 7 miles of our beautiful beach, the wooded beauty of Nehalem Bay State Park, and the magnificence of Neahkahnie Mountain.

Well...with now over 40,000 reactions to our prior post, which is still completely wild, we feel this is a good opportunity to offer some insight into the subject of service animals in small businesses.

We received a few private messages from people with personal experience who offered thoughtful and helpful guidance. We appreciate them. This can be a delicate situation, and small-business owners must balance two very real responsibilities: respecting the rights of people with disabilities under the ADA and meeting health department requirements.

In Oregon, service dog handlers are not required to provide documentation, certification, or even a vest. When it isn’t obvious that a dog is a service animal, businesses are allowed to ask only two questions:

1. Is the dog a service animal required because of a disability?

(Which typically we will only ask the first part of this question)

2. What work or task has the dog been trained to perform?

(which we are unlikely to ask once we are informed that the dog is indeed a service animal)

We will continue to reinforce these training points with our staff.

We cannot say for certain whether Haley’s dog was a service animal. In reviewing the video, however, she never said that it was. What she asked was, “How do you know my dog is not a service animal?” Ideally, her response to being asked to wait outside would have been to inform us that it was a service dog, and our response would have been, “Ok, no problem, here’s your latte, have a great day”.

But here’s the important part: whether or not the dog was a service animal, it could not be allowed to jump on a counter where food and drinks are served. Even a service dog must remain under its handler’s control, and the ADA allows a business to ask that a dog be removed if it is not controlled and kept off of and out of food handling locations. The customer must still be offered service without the dog present, which is exactly what our team lead did.

So, to the “It’s just a dog, get over it” crowd: we love dogs. We also love passing our health inspections and keeping our little coffee shop open. One of those things pays the bills.

We’re proud of our team lead. She handled an uncomfortable situation calmly, continued offering service, and is open to learning. So are we.

We have a young, eager crew who are hungry for feedback and we welcome thoughtful input from people with experience. We’re listening. Just please keep it respectful; this is about learning how to handle these situations properly, not attacking anyone.

Warmly,

Lisa & Jules

Well, we certainly didn’t see that coming; apparently all these years we’ve been wasting our time posting photos of coffee 😂

The response to our last post has been overwhelming. We’ve read your comments, laughed at quite a few of them, and have been genuinely touched by the kindness and support you’ve shown to our crew and our little shop.

To the thousands (!!!) of you who have liked, commented, shared, and left us such incredibly kind 5-star reviews, thank you. We thought we were talking to our little corner of the Oregon coast but Facebook had other plans.

To our longtime customers, you already know how much we love you and this community.

And to the hundreds of new people who have followed us over the last few days, welcome! We’re so happy you’re here. We hope someday you make it to Manzanita, stop in, say hello, and let us make you a really good cup of coffee.

From all of us at Manzanita Coffee Co, thank you for rooting for our little shop.

First time for everything, as they say. This is the first time we've ever challenged a negative review. The review:
"I ordered a latte and a woman with brown hair rudely told me that my dog needs to wait outside. I told her that I would not do so, because it’s a service animal, and she said I can’t be inside. I told her to refund me, and she argued back and forth with me until she finally gave me a refund. Don’t waste your money here - I walked to the hotel a few steps away and got a high quality coffee with a smile there and no issues."

Our response:
"We rarely respond to reviews such as this but it is such a deeply inaccurate characterization of the actual interaction that we are compelled to respond.

Only after your dog jumped up on the counter, placing its front paws on the surface from which we serve food and drink to our customers did we advise you that pets are not allowed in the shop. At no time did you state your dog was a service animal, you actually asked, “How do you know its not a service animal?”
The clear response would have been, “Based on its untrained behavior.” But our team member did not say this, she instead offered proper service to you and offered to deliver your latte to you outside, which you twice refused. You asked for a refund, and promptly received one. We’re happy to share the video of the interaction with you, should you like to refresh your memory.

In the meantime, we’re delighted you got a great coffee in our sweet town, we have fantastic shop owners up and down Laneda."

UPDATE:
Well, we certainly didn’t see that coming; apparently all these years we’ve been wasting our time posting photos of coffee 😂

The response to this post has been overwhelming. We’ve read your comments, laughed at quite a few of them, and have been genuinely touched by the kindness and support you’ve shown to our crew and our shop.

Let’s keep running with the laughter vibe, we’re reading every comment and will be sending Manzanita Coffee Co merch to the comments that most tickle us. Keep it funny and gentle!

For those rightfully concerned we put the post “on blast”, we did not. Apparently Facebook has a threshold of interest and will blast your post across the continent. We were speaking to our small community and found ourselves unexpectedly reaching the globe!

From all of us at Manzanita Coffee Co, thank you for rooting for our little shop.

Meet Vanna Yost, our baker at Manzanita Coffee Company.

Vanna is the definition of an OG. She worked at Manzanita Coffee some time before our new ownership transition in 2022, and we are so delighted to have her return and join our team.

Somehow she makes a most demanding job look easy.
This holiday week alone, Vanna baked more than 500 scones—in addition to the other delicious treats that fill our pastry case every morning.

And did we mention this is her part-time job?!

We’re incredibly lucky to have Vanna. Her talent, dedication & commitment , and incredible energy are a big part of what keeps Manzanita Coffee Company operating successfully. We are so appreciative of all her hard work!

The Fourth of July is our busiest day of the year.

While everyone is celebrating, our crew is pouring coffee, making breakfast, keeping the line moving, AND still smiling.

We couldn’t do what we do without them. Thank you for showing up, working hard, taking care of our customers, and making Manzanita Coffee Company what it is.

Happy Fourth of July from all of us. ❤️🤍💙

These are handmade gourmet marshmallows from XO Marshmallow. They are so fluffy, rich, and perfect for coffee, hot chocolate, and beach campfires. They’re crafted in small batches with flavors like Chocolate Chip, Salted Caramel and more.

We brought a few boxes into the shop because we thought y'all would enjoy them especially on a rainy Oregon coast day with a cup of our much loved mocha... or better yet on a perfect summer beach evening roasted on a campfire. Or as we prefer them...straight out of the box 🤗
