A single loaf of sourdough bread can take 24 hours or more from start to finish!

Unlike many commercial breads that can be mixed, proofed, and baked in just a few hours, sourdough relies on a natural fermentation process. The dough is mixed, stretched and folded, allowed to slowly ferment, shaped, and then often rests overnight before baking.

That long fermentation time is what helps develop sourdough's signature flavor, texture, and crust.

So while a loaf may disappear in a day or two at home, it spent an entire day (or longer!) being carefully crafted before it ever reached your table.
