Kort - i s m pov: you came for the cake but stayed for the lore

27 yr old single mom who overshares on the internet + occasionally bakes for people who ask nicely

yall asked for the bathroom transformation next and i aim to please so here she is, in all her glory✨

i don’t know why finally putting a bathroom together makes everything else feel a little less chaotic, but it does. maybe it’s because no matter how messy life gets, having one finished space reminds you that progress is still progress.

anyways, let me know what you think of the bathroom and i’ll have pt. 5 (the move in) uploaded for u tomorrow🤎

happy father’s day to the woman who always made it happen for me.

after becoming a mom at 17, she worked doubles at waffle house and sonic until she joined the military. always sending money home so i could go to the best little christian private school because she believed i deserved every opportunity she never had.

when she got back home i remember she put me in every activity i wanted to try (don’t even ask how dance went lol) but when i fell in love with competitive cheer, she somehow found a way to afford a sport built for families with two incomes.

looking back, i have no idea how she did it.

but she did. alone.

and she loved me so fiercely that i never once felt like i was missing anything.

then life came full circle.

i was 17 and pregnant, terrified, convinced my life was over. i can still hear her telling me “it’s me and you against the world baby girl and we’re gonna be just fine.”

and we were.

now here we are, ten years later.

she just beat stage 3c ovarian cancer.

she officially became a disabled veteran after giving so much of herself in service to our country (including her ovaries)

she somehow became an even better nana than she was a mom.

and somewhere along the way, she stopped just teaching me how to survive and started teaching me how to actually live.

how to slow down.

how to stop taking ordinary days for granted.

how to understand that one day these really will be “the good old days.”

i spent so much of my adult life trying to be just like her. strong. independent. convinced i had to carry the whole world by myself.

but after everything life has thrown at us, i can honestly say there is something so healing about being back in my mama’s house.

knowing the lights will always come on.

there will always be food in the fridge.

and no matter how old i get, i’ll always have a hug waiting for me when i need one.

thank you for loving me enough that i never knew any different.

thank you for being the safe place my son and i call home.

happy father’s day, mama. i thank God every single day that i still get to be living in the good old days with you🤎

fun fact: the bathroom was actually the first space I finished beginning to end (now i need u to read this to the end and pick what pt. u want next plssssss)😛

while everything else around me was absolute chaos. boxes everywhere. furniture stacked on top of furniture. no real sense of home yet. every night i could walk into the bathroom, shut the door, take a flaming hot shower and while watching the day go down the drain i’d remind myself that eventually the garage would look like this too.

it became my little reset button in the middle of all the madness.

now i need you guy’s help deciding what comes next. do we keep the series rolling with pt. 5 the move in ORRRRR do y’all want a bonus episode showing the entire bathroom transformation from start to finish for a little instant gratification before we jump back into the garage chaos?

let me know in the comments because i’m torn!!!! also what do we think of the bathroom transformation???? y’all know my love language is words of affirmation😇

i accidentally (on purpose) fossilized mosquito bodies into my floors and honestly that’s probably the least concerning thing that happened during this renovation. 🦟 👀

pt. 4 is where i learned that diy confidence and actual diy knowledge are two completely different things.

i ran out of clear coat halfway through, left the garage open so i didn’t pass out from the fumes, came back to dozens of mosquitoes permanently attached to my floor, panicked, made it worse, painted over wet paint, and just kept on pretending i knew what i was doing.

the craziest part is everything y’all have watched over these last four videos happened in less than a week. i don’t think i even realized how much we were getting done until i started putting this series together.

somehow… it all worked out perfectly fine and my floors are beautiful. you’ll get to see them real soon in pt. 5 when we start moving in!!!!

nothing screams "i have my life together" quite like accidentally epoxying yourself into a corner of the garage you're converting into an apartment.

pt. 3 and we finally made it to the actual renovations. no more hauling stuff, no more clearing things out, for now lol. just me, an extendo roller and an alarming amount of confidence for someone who has absolutely no idea what they're actually doing.

one thing i have learned about myself this season of life is i may genuinely be hanging on by a thread, but baby it's a thread of His garment and somehow that has continued to be enough🤎

today i got a reality check from a 10 year old.

it all started with a simple text from a mom friend asking if our boys could have a play date while she would be doing things in town today. i said yes but then immediately realized this would be the first time one of godric’s friends saw our living situation.

naturally, i spent yesterday evening planning enough outdoor activities in hopes of just keeping them outside and avoiding the garage altogether.

that plan lasted about three minutes.

then i heard “dude let’s go to your room”.

instant stomach knots.

i was standing there thinking about every insecurity i’ve had these last couple months. wondering if this little boy was going to think our home was weird. wondering if he’d make fun of it. wondering if he’d say something that would make godric suddenly see our life through a different lens.

so i followed them in and braced for impact.

we walked inside and i immediately looked at his face waiting for his reaction.

nothing.

just curiosity.

he looked around, taking everything in, and asked why godric had two beds and a couch. i explained that one bed was mine, one was godric’s, and that he could close his curtains and have his own bubble.

his response?

“oh, cool.”

and just like that i felt my shoulders drop a little.

before i walked out he asked if they could turn on godric’s neon light signs so i plugged them in, turned off the big light and when i started heading out i heard him say “woooow, i wish my room looked like this.”

tell me why i’m sitting here crying now.

i’ve spent so much time worrying that one day godric would see our situation the way i was afraid other people saw it. that he’d feel embarrassed. that he’d think we were somehow less than.

but standing there today, i realized those weren’t his feelings. they were mine.

sometimes kids have a way of reminding us that happiness isn’t nearly as complicated as adults make it and our little garage apartment is way cooler than i gave it credit for🤎

my period monster said we needed the fudgiest pecan loaded brownies that are perfectly warm and melty.

i considered doordash for approximately 12 seconds but already knew anything i ordered wasn’t going to hit the way it needed to. nothing worse than wasting the calories and being unsatisfied so naturally, i convinced myself the only way to get exactly what i wanted was to make them myself.

now i’m standing in the kitchen staring through the oven door waiting for these dang brownies to finish baking so i can go lay on a heating pad and finally start the new season of love island. will keep u updated on if it’s everything i am hoping and dreaming of lol

in the meantime, what’s your period monster’s go to craving and where are y’all getting the best brownies at???? (asking 4 a friend of course👀)

so what even is kort-ism???

well for years bake-ism paid my bills. it got me through some really hard seasons of life and i’ll always be grateful for that. but when every cake, every order, every late night is tied to survival, eventually some of the passion starts to disappear.

the truth is, i still love baking. i just love a lot of other things too.

i love storytelling. i love editing videos. i love sharing the messy middle instead of just the finished product. i love interior design. i love finding dark humor in chaos. i love connecting with people and realizing we’re all a lot more alike than we think.

see when i started this page i thought i was just building a baking brand but later realized what i was actually building was a community, and bake-ism was never really the brand…. i was.

some of the people who have helped me the most were strangers on the internet who made me feel a little less alone while i was going through the trenches. now i hope this page can be that for somebody else.

a place where we can talk about cakes one day and garage renovations the next. where single mom struggles, coparenting rants, diy projects, wins, losses, and the occasional cat trauma all have a seat at the table.

so welcome to kort-ism. all the things i love. all the things i’m learning. all the things i’m rebuilding.

and probably a few cakes too✨
