Some recipes are about more than the ingredients. They carry a little piece of the people who taught us to love the details.
These carrot cakes make me think of my grandmother, Beverly, who passed away when I was just 7 years old.
Grandma had a degree in Home Economics from Virginia Tech, graduating in 1938, and when she threw a dinner party, she threw a dinner party. She had a corner cupboard full of beautiful, fancy dishes that I loved looking through. Setting the table was an adventure, and every little detail mattered.
Looking back, I can see how much of that stayed with me. Maybe thatās why I have cupboards full of china of my own, and why I love finding just the right plate and making my desserts look just so. To me, itās about more than making something taste good. Itās about the presentation, the little details, and making something feel special.
I wish I could remember more of the time I had with her, but Iām thankful for the little things that have stayed with me, even all these years later. In some ways, I think a little of Bev finds its way into my kitchen every time I bake.
Today, itās carrot cake with cream cheese icing. A little old-fashioned goodness, made with love.
