Our Story:

Margaret Chambers Matthews, known as “Big Ma,” was my great-grandmother. I spent the first four years of my life in the cozy kitchen of her small A-framed farmhouse at the tip of Candles Mountain in Virginia. As both a farmers’ daughter and later, wife, she made everything from scratch. If I close my eyes, I can still smell her spicy gingerbread cookies and taste the buttery crust she made for her Lemon Chess Pie. With an impeccable blend of tart and sweet, that pie always makes my eyes water and my mouth smile. Her Sweet Potato Pound Cake, which she sumptuously “dressed up” with a Brown Sugar Glaze, and her Sweet Potato Pie were famous in the community. She even met my great-grandfather, George Matthews, when she took 1st prize at a county bake sale. She used to say that “cookies tickle the belly, but pie soothes the soul.”

Big Ma’s recipes were passed down from mother to daughter through the generations. Even though I trained at the prestigious Peter Kumps’ French Cooking School, I soon learned that Big Ma baked in the same way — always fresh, natural and without preservatives — because in her kitchen, desserts never lasted long. In August 2010, I started my adventure of sharing my luscious desserts with the men and women in barbershops and salons within the Harlem community. It all started with Big Ma’s Sweet Potato Pie, then came Sweet Potato Pound Cake with a drizzle of silky brown sugar glaze. Then I brought my creamy Lemon-Lime Cheesecake with Gingerbread Crust. Next, my very favorite cookies like White Chocolate Lemon Coconut and Almond Butter Brickle. Lastly I watched people’s eyes light up when they tasted my famously moist, sugar-free Chocolate Zucchini Bread with toasted hazelnuts. I’m still spreading my wings, bringing you the best Southern desserts I can…cause we’re all just one Sweet Potato Pie away from home.
