A major wave of bird migration is expected across Wisconsin TONIGHT (August 26), with 19 million birds predicted to move through the state in the dark of night.

Lights Out Wisconsin is urging everyone to turn off or dim non-essential outdoor lights and close window shades from 11 p.m.–6 a.m. to help birds safely migrate.

If you thought you knew the definition of conservation, think again...Adrian Treves, professor of environmental studies at the University of Wisconsin–Madison’s Nelson Institute for Environmental Studies, was one of the authors of the new definition. “We aimed to be inclusive, whether you work to conserve water, soil, air quality, or any individual organism. All are welcome,” Treves said.

The updated definition reads: “Conservation is a practice informed by the best evidence-based science and place-based knowledge whose outcomes protect and restore the natural environment — including its air, soil, water, biological diversity, ecosystem processes, and evolutionary potential — to ensure equitable benefits derived from nature and safeguard its value for current and future generations of all life.“

To help more Wisconsinites participate in AIS monitoring, UW–Madison Division of Extension’s Natural Resources Institute is once again hosting Aquatic Invasive Species Snapshot Day, an annual, statewide community science event that mobilizes volunteers to monitor lakes, rivers, and wetlands for invasive species. This year’s event is Saturday August 8th and there are events in 25 locations across the state.
