Today we honor the women behind the badge, the sirens, the long nights, and the difficult calls — the mothers of first responders and the mothers who serve as first responders themselves.

To the moms who raised sons and daughters willing to answer the call of duty, thank you for the strength, sacrifice, prayers, and love you poured into them. Your support built the courage our communities depend on every day.

And to the mothers who put on the uniform themselves — whether in law enforcement, fire service, EMS, dispatch, healthcare, or emergency response — thank you for carrying the weight of two of the hardest jobs in the world. You protect your families while also protecting complete strangers. You comfort others on their worst days while still being the heart of your own home.

You are the calm in chaos, the voice of reassurance, the backbone of your families, and the strength of your communities.

Today we celebrate your sacrifice, your compassion, your resilience, and your unwavering love.

Happy Mother’s Day to all the incredible moms who serve and the moms who stand behind those who do. Your impact reaches farther than words can express. 💙🚔🚑🚒

Robeson County history hit. That's Elbert Thompkins, "ambulance driver for the Robeson County Rescue Department" in the Red Springs Citizen on April 30, 1975.

He was participating in a "fake wreck" on Wednesday night, part of an EMT course conducted at RED Springs Rescue Squad inc. See more below.

The Robeson County Rescue Unit was organized in 1954 [and renamed Lumberton Emergency Rescue Squad in the mid 1960s. It still operates today as Lumberton Rescue and EMS Inc.]

The Red Springs Rescue Squad was organized around 1965 and is still operating today.

From the newspaper story:

The Red Springs Rescue Squad has been privileged to have Dr. Charles Johnson and Mrs. Macie King teach a 91 hour course in E. M. T. (Emergency Medical Technician Course).

These instructors were assigned by the Medical Services, and at times were assisted by members of the Rescue Squad. Those taking the course were required to spend 81 hours in the classes, and 10 hours in the emergency room of the hospital.

Climaxing the course was a fake wreck on Wednesday night. Several teenagers supposedly had an automobile accident with multiple injuries. Members of the squad were surprised with the announcement to render on the scene aid.

Ambulances arrived, along with the squad. Victims were treated, and transported to a make believe hospital where the doctor pointed out mistakes made in rendering aid.
