Super Simple Valentineās Day Heart Apple Tart
I used premade pie crust and homemade apple pie filling. This turned out so good it was gone immediately and I had to make a second one!
This recipe will make THREE tarts (6 crusts) IF you cut it into a heart shape!
Ingredients
⢠6 cups peeled, cored, and diced apples (Granny Smith + Honeycrisp mix recommended)
⢠½ cup granulated sugar
⢠¼ cup brown sugar
⢠ā
cup cornstarch
⢠1 cup water or apple cider
⢠½ cup light corn syrup (for shine and smooth texture)
⢠1 tsp cinnamon
⢠¼ tsp nutmeg
⢠¼ tsp salt
⢠1 tbsp lemon juice
⢠1 tsp vanilla extract
⢠2 tbsp butter
Method
1. Base slurry: In a large saucepan, whisk together sugar, brown sugar, cornstarch, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt.
2. Add liquids: Slowly whisk in water (or cider) and corn syrup until smooth.
3. Cook until glossy: Bring to a simmer over medium heat, stirring constantly, until the mixture thickens and looks shiny.
4. Add apples: Stir in diced apples and cook 8ā10 minutes, until tender but still holding shape.
5. Finish: Remove from heat, stir in lemon juice, vanilla, and butter.
6. Cool: Let sit ā the filling will thicken further as it cools, setting into that jellyālike consistency.
I cooled the filling completely prior to putting in tart shell so my crust wouldnāt get soggy. I was very impatient and didnāt want to wait so I put a piece of parchment down on poured it over the counter to spread thin for speedy cooling š
I eyeballed the heart but you can use a large cutter if you have it. Seal the ends with a fork and brush and egg wash on top. (1 egg, 1 TBS cream) Bake at 375 for 15-20 mins or crust is brown and golden!
