Hot take 🔥

Show up, have a baby and don’t die isn’t funny because women *actually* are showing up and dying.

We are swinging from one extreme to the next. An informed woman, who is educated about birth, trusts her physiology, who understands interventions and how/when they are used and has a voice in her birth shouldn’t be a threat to anyone. And if you’re triggered by women with “plans” - what’s that really about? Because it’s not about her.

Demanding more accountability from a system that has been causing preventable harm to women isn’t being unreasonable. I’d call it being a responsible consumer.

Effacement matters! Dilation always steals the show, but you can’t have fully dilated cervix that is also firm. Especially if you’re a first time parent, much of the work in early labor is thinning the cervix. This is invisible work and doesn’t happen overnight. Dilation is only one piece of the equation and hardly the most important.

Hospital systems need to change. There are definitely providers who are causing harm. AND there are still health care professionals who care about you and your birth. I’ve been witness to the horrible and the surprisingly supported.

Nuance is lost on social media. And every experience is individual. Let’s not demonize entire professions and expect them to be open to our perspective.

Labor is 90% mental.

Even as a Doula, I feel like there is too much attention and pressure on all the things you “should “be doing to prepare our bodies for birth. And neglect, one of the most important pieces of being able to labor and cope well: how are we going to mentally withstand the intensity of labor? what is our relationship with uncertainty and surrender?

You’re an individual, not just your age. Your health isn’t defined by your birthday. Your ability to carry a healthy pregnancy and baby isn’t in jeopardy just because you’re over 35.

And for some of us, we are in better shape now than we were in our 20s. Yes, statistically women over 35 are more likely to develop complications, but it’s far from a guarantee! Remember what’s most likely happen: a healthy pregnancy and baby. And should anything change, just like in any monitored pregnancy, the doctors are there should you *actually* become high risk.

And there are perks. You get genetic testing covered by insurance. You’ll have extra ultrasounds (if you want them). And you’ll get to have faith in a body that’s gotten you this far

Nothing in birth is black or white. Including when to leave for the hospital!

The 511 or 411 rule is a good foundation but it’s not a perfect metric. Many labors can start in the 3-5 minute range but the intensity just isn’t there- which for a first time mom can also be hard to judge, because early labor can feel intense!

Watch your behavior, check in with yourself more than you check in on a timer. Most of the time the app will tell you to go to the hospital and will be too early! Listen to yourself and/or check in with your doula about if it’s the “right” time.

But honestly, the right time, is the time that feels right for you. Not a range. Not ChatGPT. Not even your doula. Only you can make that call.

When did you leave for your birth place? Too soon? Too late? Just right? Let’s hear your story ⬇️

You don’t find a lot of optimism culturally or in the medical world when you have your babies past 35…

But I’m here to change that tune.

Your age does not dictate the health of your pregnancy or your ability to birth your baby.

Your age is not a reason to label you high risk.

Your age is not a liability.

But who you choose to support you in pregnancy and birth could be… find a provider who will treat you as an individual, promote healthy lifestyle and diet, and believes in your ability to have a healthy pregnancy in birth, regardless of your age.
