Tip of the day: Always make sure you read through a recipe several times prior to beginning the recipe - both the ingredient list and the instructions. This will help you understand the recipe, what steps need to be taken and to make sure you have all of your ingredients. There is nothing worse than starting a baking project to only come to realize that you do not have a crucial ingredient!!

Cake frosting tips: Place a dollop of frosting on the cake plate, and place the first cake layer on top. This will keep the cake from moving as you work. Frost the top, add the next layer, then coat the whole cake with a thin layer of frosting. This “crumb coat” holds loose crumbs in place. Put the cake in the freezer for 15 minutes, then remove and finish frosting, starting with the top, then the sides.

Tip of the day: To give an iced cake that glossy finish - right before serving - use a hairdryer on the medium heat setting on the outside of the cake.

Did you know: There are two types of measuring cups-- liquid measuring cups and dry measuring cups. A liquid measuring cup is usually glass or plastic with a handle and a spout. A dry measuring cup is usually metal or plastic with straight edges. You may not think it makes a difference, but it does. If you use the wrong type of measuring cup for your ingredients, your measurements will be inaccurate. For example, if you measure your flour in a liquid measuring cup, you're likely to add a whole extra tablespoon to your batter, which, believe it or not, can completely change the outcome of your recipe.

Did you know: To retrieve stray eggshells in mixture, use the emptied half-shell–eggshell sticks to eggshell. If you don’t get them all, they will sink during baking, so you can turn baked cake over when cool and retrieve them.

Tip of the day: To check the freshness of eggs, place them in a bowl of water–if they sink, you know they are fresh. If they float and stand on one end, they aren't. It is always best to bake with the freshest ingredients!

Tip of the day: When baking a cake whether it be a box mix or from scratch, your refrigerated items such as eggs, milk or butter, should be brought to room temperature prior to adding them to your dry ingredients. This allows them to disburse more evenly through your cake batter.

Did you know: For evenly baked cakes without a 'domed' top - bake your cakes at a lower temperature (300 degrees) until the cake is done. Usually it takes 10 minutes longer than if you were baking it at the regular temperature of 350 degrees.
