Ajwe. Scones. Family. Love.
Ajwe Scones. Ajwe (ah-je-way) is just a made up name that is both the founder and the heritage. Anaka Jeanne Wamstad-Evans. Her Grandmother, Barb Evans, was a second grade teacher who loved children, teaching, baking, and chocolate. She developed a scone recipe for an amazing soft and delectable chocolate chip scone for herself and her family. It was shared with friends and students and teachers. Barb Evans passed away unexpectedly in December of 2000, before meeting many of her grandchildren.
Anaka is one of those grandchildren. She was born after her grandmother had passed away, and grew up with her father making the chocolate chip scones for breakfast. She learned how to make the scones and grew older becoming a young woman. Her freshman year of highschool she needed to raise money for a marching band trip to Hawaii. Anaka asked her dad if they could have a bake sale. She would bake grandma’s scones to help raise money for her trip. They did a virtual bake sale on Facebook and instead of the 5 or 6 dozen they expected to sell, they sold 40 dozen.
Now Ajwe scones are available for purchase at the Sunday Farmers’ Market at Union College. A loved recipe bridging generations, and loss, to give the love anew to our community. We modified the recipe for some different kinds of scones, and still offer the original chocolate chip scone recipe. Across time and space. Love grows and shares. Come and share the love with Ajwe Scones.
