Remembering: When I was around 14 years old I can remember our family attending a church potluck. I decided I wanted to make a dish and went with a dessert recipe. My mom was a Martha Stewart magazine subscriber at the time, so I chose a recipe for a sweet bread that incorporated fruit preserves. It was to be baked in a loaf pan and I followed all the directions, or so I thought. I was convinced that it would be delicious and everyone would be amazed at my dessert making abilities. What I ended up with was nothing like the beautiful picture in the magazine, but an overcooked, tough, bread-like thing that seemed to be greasy and dry at the same time. My girlfriends made fun of the terrible outcome. One of them even blamed Martha for publishing a recipe that would turn out so bad. I just figured it was a fluke and decided that new recipes for important events were a bad idea. Although that recipe was a flop, I didn't let it steer me away from baking altogether. Based on that one recipe I could have decided I was a terrible baker and that I should leave the food preparation to the grown ups, because they knew what they were doing, obviously. But no, I'm a glutton for punishment and I continued to bake and get better at it as time passed.If presented with that same recipe today, who knows what would happen. I'm just glad my younger self didn't give up on baking just because of that loaf pan dessert flop back in middle school.
