Fruits Damaged by the 2026 Frost
The April 2026 spring freeze caused severe damage to many fruit crops across the eastern U.S., with losses ranging from 60% to over 90% depending on the variety and region

The most affected crops included:

Tree fruits
Apples – Losses of 70–90% in many orchards; surviving fruit often had dead seeds and “frost rings”

Peaches, nectarines, apricots – 90–100% losses in some areas

Cherries, plums – 95–100% losses in parts of Pennsylvania

Pears – 60–80% losses in European pear orchards

Berries
Blueberries – High vulnerability at the pink bud stage; significant losses in mid-Atlantic regions

Cranberries – Severe radiation frost damage in low bogs due to cold air drainage

Grapes

W**e grapes – Bud break stage most vulnerable; damage in regions like Virginia and New York’s Finger Lakes

Table grapes – Potential yield reductions from bud kill.

Stone fruits
Peaches, nectarines, apricots – Already listed above; early bloom made them highly susceptible

Other notable impacts

Strawberries – Less affected than other crops, but some late-season varieties still saw setbacks

Citrus – Early January freeze in Florida caused damage, though less severe than in stone fruits

In summary, the 2026 frost hit apples, peaches, nectarines, apricots, cherries, plums, pears, blueberries, cranberries, and w**e grapes hardest, with some varieties experiencing near-total crop loss. Even surviving fruit often had reduced quality or market value due to frost damage.

And so it begins. These are the fruit bins at Walmart. Maybe I should have gotten some of those plums.

Running a business is always a challenge. Things change quickly, costs go up, some products become unavailable due to weather, demand, or sometimes, for no apparent reason. This Summer has been particularly challenging for me. I almost always feel a little challenged by life in general. There have been new challenges this Summer, but I'm not ready to talk about those yet. I'll just focus on the fruit situation for now.

My pies do not like this high humidity, and neither do I. Those late Spring frosts damaged a lot of produce. It hit strawberries, apples, peaches and cherries. Probably a lot of other things that I'm not aware of yet. I get my cherries from Michigan. They have a very short season here and in Michigan. Today, I tried to order cherries and they are unavailable. I'm not sure what I am going to do about fruit pies in the coming months. I have always had obstacles to work around in business, probably always will. Lots of times over the years, different things have been unavailable for one reason or another. So, it's time to be creative and work with the things that are available to me.

I'm open to suggestions about other things that can fill in some of the fruit pie space. There are a lot of things that I can do like non fruit pies, pound cakes, cookies, brownies, brookies, blondies, sweet rolls, biscuits or muffins. There are a lot of options. I'm not looking to expand and do everything like I used to, so don't go crazy with the suggestions from yesteryear.

Hopefully, next year, the fruit trees and plants will recover and be more abundant than ever! 🥧🍎🍒🍑
