A RECIPE, A FARM, AND A LITTLE PIECE OF SOUTH CAROLINA HISTORY
Some recipes are more than recipes. They’re memories, traditions, and gifts passed from one generation to the next.
When I was 10 years old, my family moved to Lamar, South Carolina, where we bought a farm and grew cotton, peanuts, soybeans, to***co, and winter crops for local farmers markets. With no house on the property, my parents and older brother built a small living space inside a barn — a barndominium long before they were fashionable!
Our first winter, two widowed sisters who lived just across the swamp invited my mom and me into their home to make fruitcake. They shared their treasured family recipe with us, a gift I appreciated then but didn’t fully understand until much later.
Now, 33 years later, that same fruitcake remains the most requested Christmas gift I’m asked to make. It’s a labor of love, from chopping the fruit and nuts to allowing the flavors to develop over three days. And like a good tradition, it only gets better with time.
This year, I’m excited to share a little piece of Lamar, South Carolina, with you — bringing a treasured family recipe from the Wyndham sisters to our local farmers markets starting this week!
A little history in every loaf. A whole lot of love in every bite.
