I’ve often been asked how I would describe a chimney cake. Well, it’s crunchy on the outside with a perfectly caramelized sugar coating, and hollow and soft on the inside. It’s like biting into a sugary, crispy shell that melts into a warm, pillowy center.

Chimney Cakes (Kürtőskalács) are made from a sweet, ye**ty dough that’s twisted into a long strip, wrapped around a cone-shaped mold, rolled in sugar, and baked until golden and crispy on the outside, with a soft, fluffy interior.

This Transylvanian treasure dates back to the 15th century and even made its way into a fancy cookbook in 1784, thanks to Countess Mária Mikes of Zabola. So yeah, it’s got some serious history.

Traditionally, Kürtőskalács is enjoyed plain, but why stop there? Roll it in extra sugar, sprinkle it with nuts, or go wild with a cinnamon-sugar dusting.
