Lost Ballparks, Vol. 1: Connie Mack Stadium

Lost Ballparks, Vol. 1: Connie Mack Stadium We invite your stories of Phillies games from Baker Bowl through Citizens Bank Park. Two inches either way and San Francisco has a championship.

We are also interested in your stories about different teams, their histories, their 15 minutes of fame, quirky stories about ballplayers, managers, coaches and fans. I tend to share a lot of stories about Phillies baseball because I keep quite a few baseball resources here at home. I watch on average, 4 or 5 games a week on TV, or better yet, listen to the superb team of Scott Franzke and Larry A

nderson on radio. I can still see Willie McCovey smoke a line drive that would have won the 1962 series for the SF Giants. As it stands, 2B Bobby Richardson caught the ball and the Yankees add to their unbelievable collection.

From 1960 to 1971, outfielder Tony González enjoyed a fine major-league career, He was never an All-Star – no insult, considering that Willie Mays, Hank Aaron, and Roberto Clemente were his peers – but he might have accomplished even more had he not suffered from back and eye problems. (The lat...

Ruben Amaro Sr., who played a role in the Phillies' greatest successes but was forever haunted by his part in the franchise's most infamous failure, died Friday in a Miami nursing home. He was 81.

DICK ALLEN was known as ‘Richie’ when he broke into the big leagues with the Phillies in 1964, for reasons still unknown.

ROOKIE of the Year, 1964: Allen batted .318 and led the league with 125 runs, 13 triples, a total of 80 extra base hits and 352 total bases. He led the Phillies to a six-and-a-half game lead in the NL with 12 games to play.

As every fan knows, the Phillies lost 10 of their last 12 and ended the season tied for second place, a collapse of historic proportions. That’s the closest they would come to the World Series until their 3 consecutive playoff appearances as winners of the newly established NL East division in 1976-’77-’78.

During the collapse of ’64 Allen hit .438 with 5 doubles, 2 triples, 3 home runs and 11 RBI in those last 12 games. You might say it wasn’t his fault.

And yet, people seemed to take their frustrations out on the 7-time All Star. He was booed. The Phillies fans didn’t throw snowballs, but they threw a lot of other things. Go figure.

Having left town for the Cardinals and other teams, he returned in 1976, in time to act as a mentor to Mike Schmidt, who credits Dick Allen for helping him settle into his role as the Phillies best player

The other night [Fri. 1/6/17] before our show with Bob Lougheed's Memphis Mafia at Rocky Gap Casino, I met Pirates great Bob Robertson. He asked to be introduced to Bob [a premier Elvis impersonator]. Robertson is a native of North Central MD, a favorite son of the area.

I said, 'Bob Robertson, I remember you! You had a nice career--you killed the Phillies, at least in my memory.' Because I had on a jacket and tie, he said 'what are you, the manager?' I said 'No, I'm the keyboard player. Hey, you got a World Series ring for '71, right? What was it like playing with Clemente, Al Oliver and guys like that?' Well, apparently it was as cool as I would imagine.

A while back I attempted to redirect any interest in my ‘Connie Mack Stadium’ page elsewhere. There are much more comprehensive baseball groups and they are better than the one I tried to start.

Every so often the page gets a like or two, so I’ll keep it up and maybe comment sometimes.
