Broccoli is a nutrient-dense vegetable that belongs to the cruciferous family, which also includes cabbage, kale, and cauliflower. It is well known for its high levels of vitamins C and K, as well as fiber and antioxidants that support overall health. Many people enjoy broccoli steamed, roasted, or added to stir-fries, where it absorbs flavors while keeping a satisfying crunch. Its slightly bitter taste can become milder and even a bit sweet when cooked properly. Broccoli is often recommended as part of a balanced diet because it may help support heart health and digestion. Despite its reputation among picky eaters, it can be surprisingly versatile and delicious.
In addition to the common green variety, there is also a striking purple type of broccoli that stands out for its color and slightly different flavor. Purple broccoli tends to be a bit sweeter and more tender, making it appealing in both raw and cooked dishes. The vibrant hue comes from anthocyanins, the same type of antioxidants found in blueberries and red cabbage. When cooked, the purple color may fade to green, but it still retains its nutritional benefits. This variety is often grown in cooler climates and can sometimes be found at farmers markets or specialty stores. Including different types of broccoli in meals can add both visual appeal and a broader range of nutrients.

Honey bees are small but incredibly important insects that play a major role in our ecosystems. They are best known for producing honey, a natural sweetener made from flower nectar, but their real impact comes from pollination. As bees move from flower to flower collecting nectar, they transfer pollen, helping plants reproduce. This process supports the growth of fruits, vegetables, and many crops that humans and animals rely on.
A honey bee colony is a highly organized society made up of a queen, worker bees, and drones. The queen’s main job is to lay eggs, while worker bees handle tasks like gathering nectar, building honeycombs, and protecting the hive. Drones exist primarily to mate with a queen. Each bee has a specific role, and their cooperation allows the hive to thrive efficiently.
Honey bees are especially associated with spring, when flowers bloom and nectar becomes plentiful. During this season, bees are at their busiest, traveling from blossom to blossom and helping bring landscapes to life. Their activity supports the vibrant colors and growth we see in spring gardens and farms. Without honey bees, spring would be far less productive and much less colorful.
In addition to their ecological importance, honey bees also symbolize renewal and growth, making them a perfect match for the spring season. Their presence signals that plants are flourishing and ecosystems are functioning properly. Protecting honey bees is essential, as their populations have faced challenges from habitat loss and environmental changes. Supporting them helps ensure that both nature and agriculture continue to thrive year after year.

Hi, friends! 👋🏼 Time for a little life update.

There is a reason we have been MIA from markets this month… we are MOVING! 🚗💨 The last few weeks have been a whirlwind as we have been downsizing and packing. We are settling in to my hometown, and have big plans for gardening and expanding what we offer- stay tuned!

Where to find Spring Hollow Mill products: for now, we will ✨exclusively✨ be selling on Red Hills Small Farm Alliance. A few regulars have reached out looking for our products- don’t worry! We will be listing again this weekend for next week’s Thursday delivery day! Please, reach out with special requests outside of what is offered on Red Hills, or if you are outside their delivery range. We will find a way to get freshly milled, organic flour to you!

Please continue to support Feather Oaks Farmers Market and the great, local products they have! We just cannot commit to an in-person market at this time, but plan to return to special markets on occasion.

LIVE OAK, HERE WE COME!

Curious about how to mill your own flour? Come join us at The Prepared Table for my in person class on milling! There are two spots open, so grab one before they are gone!

Thursday, April 16 from 6pm-8pm

You will learn all I know about milling, and will take home some bread and flour for at home practice. See you there!

A Little Proud Moment. I don’t say this enough, but this is something we’re really proud of…

Over the past few years, we’ve watched our classes fill with people who didn’t know each other at the start of the evening, and by the end, they’re lingering, talking, and laughing like old friends.

That’s always been the heart behind this space. Not just cooking, but connection. It might seem small, but to us, it’s everything.

There are two classes in April that still have availability and one is this week!
