After more than 10 years, the very first Scoop location Chris and I built together in Lake Lure will sadly not be reopening.
This is an incredibly difficult post to write.
Lake Lure was never just another business location to us. It was home. It’s where our boys went to school, where we poured our hearts into a dream, and where we spent countless long days and nights building Scoop from the ground up. We were proud to serve this beautiful community for over a decade and grateful for every customer, every family tradition, and every memory made over our ice cream brand.
Unfortunately, shortly after the bulk sale of the Lake Lure Inn properties and business entities sold nearly two years ago, the new owners informed us they would not renew our lease. At the time we were told they had different ideas for the property and ice cream was "not in their longterm plan for the space."
Hurricane Helene followed shortly after, abruptly ending our time in Lake Lure and taking the final season of business remaining on our current lease with it. Despite our many efforts to remain part of the property since then and convince the new property owners to allow us resume operations in 2026— or at least continue offering our ice cream brand there — we were recently informed that will not be happening and the new ownership decided on a less expensive offering for their customers.
It is important to clarify that the new corporate ownership has changed plans since our initial conversations and now intends to open its own ice cream shop in our former location. While it may operate in the same space and look nearly identical—with most of the fixtures, signs, and lighting that many customers associate with Scoop—it is not Scoop. It will not serve our ice cream, and it is in no way affiliated with our family or our business. We saw the use of our old sign and many other Scoop similarities today; this is not us.
To say we are heartbroken would be an understatement.
As a small family-owned business, watching something we spent over 10 years building be taken in a completely different direction has been heartbreaking. We fought hard to remain part of the community and preserve what so many families came to know as Scoop in Lake Lure, but ultimately that decision was not ours to make.
While this chapter closes in a way we never imagined, we remain incredibly thankful for the support Lake Lure gave our family and our business over the past decade. Those memories and relationships will always mean more to us than words can express.
Although this location is coming to an end, Scoop is not. We will continue focusing our hearts and efforts on serving our amazing customers at Scoop Forest City and throughout Rutherford County, where we remain committed to bringing you the delicious ice cream and family atmosphere that Scoop was built on. Our flavors will still be available nearby at Chimney Rock State Park and Rumbling Bald Resort. We hope to one day find a new space to reopen or a partner business to offer our flavors in Lake Lure and serve all of you again soon..
