The Kellers were bakers and vintners in the Alsace region of France before they arrived in the United States. Mr. Victor Keller opened the first Keller’s Bakery in Abbeville in 1884. In 1929, his son, Fenwick Keller, opened Keller’s bakery in Lafayette with his young wife, Eleanor Dyer Keller. The bakery was first located on Jefferson Street near East Main Street, and in 1948 they relocated to this newly-constructed building at 1012 Jefferson Street.
The building was built consistent with Moderne building styles of the 1940s featuring elements such as the round window and the continuous ribbon of rectangular windows turning the corner on the second floor, the multiple-level roofline, window frames set flush with the exterior building skin, and a building form that follows the building’s function, instead of a form dictated by a particular style.
For over 90 years, visiting Keller's Bakery Downtown has been a beloved family tradition for many Lafayette residents.

When I knew I was getting a batch of king cakes from Lafayette, I reached out for suggestions and multiple people told me to try Keller's Bakery Downtown, and you know what, I'm glad I put this on the list! I'm going to call this one right now - from the four I've tried, Keller's has my favorite of the Lafayette king cakes.
This is, again, like a big donut. But instead of braided and seeping vast amounts of filling, it is like a big glazed donut filled with flavored cream cheese. This cake is not fried, and the website describes this as a Danish dough but I swear, the flavor and texture are just like a glazed donut. Unlike most of the fruit + cream cheese cake fillings that I've tried, this is a well mixed flavored cream cheese inside, which I think is a nice touch for consistency.
I tried both the strawberry cream cheese and the lemon cream cheese and I think that the lemon has the edge here, although I enjoyed both. There is quite a bit of filling layered inside of this cake, not too sweet or too sour, and it pairs well with the soft cake and sweet glaze.
Compared to the other donut king cakes, this one I feel sure is a king cake despite the lack of cinnamon flavor. I would check out Keller's again if I were in the Lafayette area! They have a wide variety of flavors and sizes to pick from, and it seems like they have shipped in the past (so keep an eye out for that again in the future if you want to try this cake.)
