Shipping update!
Much of South Louisiana is still frozen today. We have word that FedEx distribution center in Memphis is also still back logged with packages. We do not feel like shipping tomorrow is an option. We will keep an eye on conditions and keep everyone updates!

Welcome to Lafayette week here at Krewe du King Cake! My awesome friend Cherie Gauthier went to Lafayette and brought me back FIFTEEN king cakes (I know!), and I am excited to share some of them with you!
So, according to gospel (by that, I of course mean The Big Book of King Cake), a few decades ago king cake as we know it today was pretty much contained to New Orleans, and not so much the rest of Louisiana. But come breakfast time, if they weren't eating boudin, the people of Acadiana were heading out for donuts. When I was growing up and staying with my maw maw in Opelousas, we frequented Mikey's Donut King if we weren't eating Billy's Boudin, but closer to Lafayette there is another donut kingdom - Meche's. And legend tells that a Pillsbury sales rep came to Rickey Meche in the 1980's and taught him about king cakes. Meche's didn't have an oven, so they deep fried them - and thus began an Acadiana donut king cake tradition that persists to this day.
There are like five Meche's Donut Kings now and I believe this came from Meche's King Cakes. This is uhhhh a big donut. It's like if a donut and a funnel cake had a baby, and then somebody blasted it with chocolate icing. I chose a half and half plain and chocolate, and I am glad I did not choose the full chocolate, because this is INTENSE.
This cake also has a tricolor drizzle instead of sprinkles, which is another trend that seems prevalent in these Lafayette king cakes. I'm guessing that this tradition also started at Meche's, but I will be reviewing three more Lafayette king cakes for you this week and there is nary a colored sugar in sight.
This rating is a little confusing, because this is a different kind of king cake than what I think of as a king cake. It's good, but I bet it would be better fresh out of the fryer on a Saturday morning.
