Lorelai’s Journey
On January 8th, our lives changed forever.
What should have been the beginning of a typical newborn journey quickly became a path we never expected to travel. From the moment she was born, our daughter, Lorelai, showed us just how strong and determined she truly is.
Lorelai was born with a rare and complex lymphatic condition that caused a significant buildup of fluid in her abdomen, a form of ascites. Doctors later discovered that the fluid was leaking through tiny holes in her lymphatic system, creating challenges that would require specialized care and ongoing treatment.
Instead of bringing our baby girl home, we found ourselves learning the routines of hospital life. As of today, Lorelai has spent more than 143 days in the NICU. What began as a hospital stay measured in days quickly turned into weeks, then months. The NICU became our second home, filled with doctors, nurses, specialists, and staff who have cared for Lorelai as if she were their own.
Over these many months, Lorelai has endured more than any child should have to face. She has undergone countless tests, procedures, scans, and treatments as her medical team works to find the best way to stop the lymphatic leak and help her body heal. Through every challenge, she has shown incredible resilience.
This week, Lorelai is scheduled to undergo her fourth procedure. While previous procedures have provided valuable information and progress, the fluid drainage from her abdominal drain has not decreased as much as doctors had hoped. The next step is another attempt to identify and repair the areas of her lymphatic system that continue to leak.
The NICU journey is often described as a marathon rather than a sprint. There have been days filled with hope and celebration, and there have been days filled with uncertainty and difficult decisions. Progress is rarely measured in giant leaps. Sometimes it is measured in small victories—a good report, a successful procedure, a comfortable day, or simply another day closer to healing.
Throughout it all, Lorelai has continued to amaze everyone around her.
Her strength shines through every challenge she faces. Her determination has inspired not only our family but also the nurses, doctors, therapists, friends, and community members who have followed her journey. Despite everything she has been through, she continues to fight with a spirit far bigger than her tiny body.
As parents, there are moments when we feel exhausted, scared, and overwhelmed. But there are also moments when we look at our daughter and find strength we never knew we had. Lorelai reminds us every day what courage looks like.
As Lorelai’s journey continued, we wanted to find a way to share her story and give people an opportunity to be part of it. That’s how the Lorelai boxes were born.
What started as a simple idea quickly became something much bigger. Each box sold became a way for friends, family, neighbors, and even strangers to support Lorelai and our family during the most difficult chapter of our lives. The boxes became a symbol of hope, community, and love.
Along the way, the support grew beyond anything we could have imagined. People didn’t just purchase boxes for themselves—they purchased them for NICU nurses, hospital staff, and others who have cared for Lorelai throughout her journey. Every order, every donation, every share, and every kind word became a reminder that we are not fighting this battle alone.
The support we have received throughout this journey has meant more than words can express. Every prayer, message, donation, meal, and act of kindness has helped carry us through some of the hardest days of our lives. Knowing that so many people are cheering for Lorelai gives us hope on the days when we need it most.
While we don’t know exactly what the coming weeks and months will bring, we do know this: Lorelai is a fighter. She has already overcome so much, and she continues to face each challenge with remarkable strength.
