This is a difficult message to share, especially since we were scheduled to vend this weekend for May Day is Lei Day. However, we respect and stand by the decision of our host.

Although we were still given the opportunity to participate as vendors, as a family born, raised, and rooted in Hawaiʻi, we have chosen to also step back from this event.

Our ʻohana and baking business are deeply woven with ALOHA. While we may be a small baking business, everything we create is shaped by the culture we carry, the aloha we extend to our customers, and the flavors of Hawaiʻi and the Pacific Islands that so many know and love.

Because of concerns around the possible misrepresentation of Hawaiian culture, we are choosing to stand firmly for authenticity. As a small family business grounded in Hawaiian ways and values, we remain committed to honoring tradition, preserving cultural respect, and upholding the spirit of aloha in everything we do.

The Hawaiian culture, while we are not blooded in lineage, is profoundly sacred to us. It has shaped who we are—how we were raised, the friendships that became ʻohana, and the morals and respect we carry today. We deeply feel the importance of protecting it.

Culture, lineage, and tradition are not just fading—they are often at risk of being misunderstood or misrepresented. Authenticity is rare and valuable. When something we feel should reflect that authenticity does not, we cannot in good conscience remain part of it.

A‘ole for us.

Here's the direct update from the host:

"It is with great disappointment that we announce the cancellation of our “May Day is Lei Day in Wakinekona” event scheduled for May 29–31, 2026.

On May 26 at approximately 4:00 PM, we were informed by Diana Anica of Rose Azule Vintage that music and performances would be limited to sporadic times throughout each day, with scheduling determined by mall management with no further details given. Our DJ and music for the event was denied as well. Unfortunately, these restrictions make it impossible for us to present the cultural experience that was originally planned and promised to our community and vendors.

When we first began working together, we were encouraged and supported in creating a meaningful cultural event that would celebrate Hawaiian traditions, music, dance, language, arts, and community. We moved forward in good faith, believing that all aspects of the event had been approved.

In Hawaiian culture, music is not simply entertainment — it is the heartbeat of our traditions. Through mele (song), hula, language, and storytelling, our culture is preserved, shared, and experienced. Without music and proper sound support, the heart of this gathering would be missing.

Many vendors and participants committed to this event with the understanding that it would include live music, hula performances, cultural sharing, games, raffles, food, arts, and crafts. Without the ability to fully present these elements, we cannot in good conscience move forward with a limited version of what was intended to be a true cultural celebration.

We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience or disappointment this cancellation may cause. We remain deeply grateful for the support, excitement, and aloha shown by our community, vendors, performers, and attendees.

This event was never about profit. It was meant to create a space where Kanaka Maoli and the Hawaiian community could share, celebrate, and honor our culture with pride and authenticity. If you continue to see May Day posts by Rose Azul Vintage, know that it is no longer the cultural celebration it was intended to be.

We remain haʻahaʻa (humbled) and hopeful for future opportunities to gather in a way that fully honors the spirit of our people and traditions.

Mahalo for your understanding and continued support."
