And then it was just us.
It’s been 30 days since you left us. The feeling is unbearable. Trying to figure out how to live without you is the hardest thing I’ve ever had to do. These feelings swallow me whole. There are minutes when I don’t think I can push through. I tell myself, just make it to the next minute. The next hour. Just one more day.
Time has stopped for me, but the world keeps spinning around me at record pace.
I still can’t believe you’re gone. I spend most days looking for you, thinking about you, missing you. It feels cruel. Grief has to be the cruelest human experience. I see you in everything, but I can’t find you anywhere.
Your memorial was so beautiful. I thought of every single thing you loved because I needed every piece of it to feel like you. I’m trying so hard to navigate all of this. Our lives were completely intertwined. Every piece, every decision, every plan, we did it together. Now I try to think about what you would want, what you would say, what you would do. I desperately wish you could just tell me.
Grief is an emptiness I never could have understood until I was forced to live inside it. Someone asks, “How’s your husband doing?” and I fall apart. I still can’t speak the words. I don’t know how to explain that you were here, and then suddenly you weren’t. And then it was just us.
You were the better half. The smarter, stronger, more empathetic half. You made everything feel safe. You always knew what to do, and now I don’t know how to brace myself through any of this without you.
I never saw my life going this way. I’m trying so hard to let go of the future I thought we had, but I don’t want another future. I want the one we planned. I want the years we were supposed to have. I want our ordinary mornings, our children growing up, our bakery, our laughter, and your hand reaching for mine.
I don’t know how 30 days have passed when I’m still standing in the moment you left.
I miss you more than words could ever hold. I love you. I will love you through every minute, every hour, and every day I somehow make it through without you.
It’s been 30 days.
I miss you.
