Fun fact!
Good gentleman roosters will often ENCOURAGE their hens to use the nesting boxes once they reach maturity! 📦

This is Zeus, one of 2 gold Orpington roosters I added to my flock this season. 🐓

Since my bantam is loyal (to his ladies) but small in stature, and we’ve had an increase of cats and kittens close to the flock this season, we made the decision to add at least one rooster.

He will likely replace the bantam as head of the flock as Mr One Eyed W***y is now 3 years old, missing an eye, and regularly tries to eat my toes. 👎

As you can see in the photos, Zeus is showing one of his favorite girls how to use the nesting box properly, and she’s watching him work!

This lady has been standoffish about the boxes, as we need to add more and she hasn’t learned to shove her way in yet. Zeus is showing her the empty boxes are safe, too!

The last 2 photographs are older, and shows him testing the bottom boxes for them last week, as they’ve all preferred the upper boxes. I know what my project is this weekend!! 🐓📦🥚

Meet Spot.
Spot escaped the yard this morning.
Spot forgot where the gate was.
Spot needed to be rescued.
Spot jumped into a cactus during her rescue.
Spot is fine.
Spot regrets nothing.
