The pogies are coming!

June 8 marks the opening of Maine’s 2026 menhaden, or pogy, season. Menhaden are a primary bait source for Maine’s lobster fishery, helping keep our working waterfronts and lobster boats supplied throughout the season.

This year, boats may land menhaden on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, with a weekly limit of up to 17,850 pounds.

Meet the MLA Board! 🦞

Sonny Beal is from and fishes out of Beals Island (no, not his own island! πŸ˜„) and has served on the MLA Board for over 10 years. He currently serves as the new Board Chairman and has been fishing since he was old enough to wear boots.
A 3rd generation lobsterman, Sonny comes from a family deeply connected to the industry. His father even served as MLA President from 1967–1974.

When asked why he wanted to serve on the board, Sonny said:

β€œTo stay informed on the topics of the industry and to be able to have a say in our future!”

When he’s not out on the water, Sonny runs a lettering business creating signs and boat names. He’s been doing it for 20 years and has lettered countless boats along the coast.

Sonny believes the MLA is always fighting for fishermen and working to keep members informed on industry updates, policy, rules, legislation, and anything else impacting the lobster industry.

Thank you, Sonny, for your years of dedication to Maine’s lobster community! βš“

Congratulations, Leia!

We’re proud to celebrate graduates like Leia who carry the values of Maine’s working waterfront with them as they pursue their future goals.

Lobstering is more than a job, it’s a way of life rooted in family, community, and hard work. The same is true for the MLA. We had a great afternoon in Port Clyde, with time to reflect, recharge, and enjoy quality time with family. A special reminder of why this work, and this community, matters so much.

As Maine's lobster fishery gears up for the busy summer season, now is a good time to take a close look at your vessel's safety equipment and make sure everything is in working order.

In the June issue of Landings, Brian Smith of U.S. Coast Guard Sector Northern New England reminds fishermen that a free Coast Guard dockside safety exam can help identify potential issues before they become problems at sea.

At the end of the day, every fisherman wants the same thingβ€”to return home safely. Taking the time now to check your vessel, safety gear, and crew preparedness can make all the difference in the months ahead.
