Joe Sargent of Milbridge was a fisherman before he was a boatbuilder — and that experience on the water still shapes the boats coming out of Sargent’s Custom Boats today.

From working on boats alongside his father to building and finishing boats that have traveled far beyond Maine, Joe has built a reputation for craftsmanship while keeping “custom” at the heart of his operation.

Brian introduces us to the man behind the builds and shares stories about the boats, the business, and a lifetime spent around Maine’s working waterfront.

ALERT FOR LOST EQUIPMENT: $5000 REWARD

If you have information regarding the vessel, please contact Mike Brosnahan at [email protected] or (508) 289-3633. Mike will coordinate recovery efforts and facilitate reward payment.

KNOWN INFORMATION:

On the night of Monday October 12th, the project team lost communications with a SeaTrac USV, which was monitoring the recent harmful algal bloom in the Gulf of Maine. The vessel’s last known position was 44.020° N, 67.673° W, approximately 30 nautical miles southeast of Frenchman Bay, Maine, where it was holding position to recharge.

When a boat was sent out later that week the vessel was not in its expected location indicating that it was adrift. It is unlikely for the vessel to have sunk as it is equipped with float bags.

Vessel Description

Color: Yellow

Dimensions: 487.68 cm (length) × 139 cm (beam)

Stern markings: “Uncrewed Surface Vehicle”

Bow markings: “SeaTrac”

A single cash reward of $5,000 is available for information leading to the successful recovery of the vessel. Eligibility for the reward and any division of payment among multiple contributors will be determined at the discretion of the SeaTrac operator team at WHOI and NERACOOS.

For safety reasons, members of the public are encouraged to report sightings rather than attempt recovery of the vessel.

Anyone who nevertheless attempts recovery should exercise caution and must not remove the vessel from the water. Any such recovery attempt is undertaken independently and at the individual’s own risk. Neither WHOI nor NERACOOS, nor their respective officers, employees, agents, or contractors, assumes responsibility for injuries to persons or damage to property arising from unauthorized recovery attempts.

🦞 V-notching or minimum gauge increase?

When federal managers pushed for a series of minimum gauge increases in the 1980's, MLA showed that V-notching could protect broodstock without putting unnecessary economic pressure on lobstermen.

The last two gauge increases were rescinded which set the minimum gauge at 3 1/4" -- which remains the standard today.

MLA advocates for good management that protects the resource AND the people who depend on it.

⛽ USDA Announces Fuel Relief for Fishermen 🦞

The MLA welcomes USDA's announcement of fuel relief for fishermen facing rising operating costs.

Higher fuel prices impact nearly every aspect of running a lobster business, putting even more pressure on already-tight margins.

MLA has been working closely with USDA to ensure federal officials understand the realities of Maine's lobster fishery. We look forward to continuing that work to help deliver meaningful fuel relief to Maine lobstermen.
