Share this with everyone! What a great resource for domestic violence victims to have!! Thank you Cabarrus County Sheriff’s Office!
October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month, and the Cabarrus County Sheriff’s Office would like to remind our community about the Safe Haven Program offered through our Animal Control Division.
Safe Haven was created to support domestic violence victims who may face an additional barrier when leaving an unsafe situation: finding a safe place for their pets.
Because domestic violence shelters are generally unable to accommodate pets other than qualifying service animals, victims may fear leaving an animal behind where it could be harmed, neglected, or used as a reason to keep them from leaving. Through Safe Haven, our Animal Control Division works with community partners, including local animal hospitals and boarding facilities, to help arrange temporary care and housing for pets while their owners seek safety and stability.
Since the program began, Safe Haven has already had the opportunity to provide support to members of our community. The program has assisted a domestic violence victim by providing a safe place for her dog while she transitioned out of an unsafe situation. She was able to reclaim her dog quickly to her new living arrangement and was very appreciative of the support provided during that transition.
Our Animal Control Division has also spoken with others who reached out for assistance and helped them find alternative arrangements for their pets before temporary boarding through the program became necessary.
If concern for your pet is creating a barrier to leaving an unsafe situation, we encourage you to reach out. Even if Safe Haven is not ultimately needed, our team can help explore available options and resources for you and your pet.
