I met with the coordinator at the Gowanda Nursing Home today for the courtyard cleanup. Our 4H crew is going to post it in our newsletter for volunteers, but we need you! We are asking for the following help:

May 4th clean up 11:00-2:00. Bring rakes, leaf blowers, bags for leaves inside the courtyard, yard gloves.

May 27th 11:00-4:00 planting perennials, shrubs, adding mulch and stones.

We are in desperate need of brown mulch, garden stone (white) vegetable plants for the residents to take care of, perennials, shrubs, potting soil, small watering cans for the residents to have to water their plants, bird feeders and seed to put by their bedroom windows, and annuals to add pops of color to their garden.

Looking for a handy person to make a few birdhouses for us. Going to give them to the residents to paint.

Also, Mrs Nancy Herrington Johnson has amazing ceramic paint nights. Hoping we can wrangle her into this and do a paint night for pieces that can go outside in the garden. Maybe folks can donate the piece they make?

Recycle, reuse, repourpose

How many of you do New Years resolutions? A few years ago we did one that we would recycle as much as we could. That has never failed we still do that. But, this year we want to do a few more things that might help our environment.

• The average person eats around 279 eggs a year. So with our family that’s over 1,000 eggs. Now we will only buy eggs in recycled paper containers. Not the styrofoam like Egglands Best comes in. So that saves over 90 styrofoam containers in the dump.
That’s over 500 years to decompose!
Recycled paper egg cartons break down in 4 weeks. Now I know one family doesn’t make a big difference. But, if we all were conscious of what we are buying that would help.

• Another huge waste we have is packaging. Boxes and bags weekly from Amazon etc. I usually don’t need anything super fast. So from now on I’ll add my items to the cart and check out one a week or bi-weekly. Clicking the less packages button if available.

Any way we can help our environment is usually not time consuming or a burden. It can be small things you choose. 🌎 we only get one earth.

THEY WILL FREEZE TO DEATH THIS WEEK! If you seriously cannot bring your dog inside I will take them in my milk house that is heated. This is a horrible way to die!
