Autumn Prairie interlude, with a nod to late butterflies and ironweed blooms and migrating birds. Put on your children’s picture book eyes to find a tiny tribute to the little white buffalo, born this past spring at the Neal Smith National Wildlife Refuge, outside of Prairie City Iowa. She, heartbreakingly, died suddenly, and many felt her loss deeply. I’m circling creating a larger piece of her, but for now, I’ve added her (and Mom) to this prairie scene, so she may graze in October Tallgrass 🌾🌾🌾

A note of personal joy, as daughter Lucy McGehee finished her first marathon today in the twin cities! It was a gorgeous run, and she did beautifully! We ran around and saw her three times out there. I’ve seen so many monarchs in the garden this year, and read it’s been a bumper summer crop in North America in general, so yeah!!! There are still a few caterpillars and chrysalis hanging around on my milkweed even now. I hope there’s chance these late travelers get to where they need to go! Art for picture book “Rings of Heartwood” Molly Beth Griffin MNHS Press, accompanying one of Molly’s inspiring poems. Scroll for the beautiful chrysalis I spied. It had darkened one morning, then by afternoon, its occupant was drying their wings! Also, the phat little caterpillars around still.

A cover share of this newly reissued short story collection by Ruth Suckow, an amazing writer working in the earlier part of last century. Highly recommend reading these shorts- astounding perspectives. I provided interior art (15 chapter heads- I always love an illustrated chapter book!), plus the cover, a period house on the edge of town, with a nod to the Midwest agrarian setting. I looked at a work of Thomas Hart Benton for the moody palette. My original works and parts of my process can be seen at the Hearst Center for the Arts in Cedar Falls, IA, until December 6th. I loved seeing my scrappy pencil roughs “elevated” from my studio floor, under their glass box! Notes of my thoughts about each illustration accompanies the originals. At a Ruth Suckow Memorial Association conference last weekend, I had the opportunity to eat my own art! “Crunch, crunch, crunch!”, writes author Charlotte Gunnufson for one page in our picture book “Seeds Go, Seeds Grow”, on my illustration board this week! It’s easy to hear why this deer snack crunches, with one rattle of a dried honey locust seed pod! Nice to know I can find reference material five minutes away in my local park.
