Hello everyone!
This is not how I thought I’d be coming back to this page, while I fully intend to continue baking, my family has been in a very difficult situation to which I am trying to help them with.
Starting in December 2024, my mother lost her job due to health concerns, which inevitably led to her losing her home. Since then, she and her children have experienced homelessness, moving between the homes of family members and friends, as well as staying in hotels and shelters.
At one point, they were even living in her van. She and the kids have been through so much over the past year. I was unaware of the situation until mid-2025, at which point I had them relocate from rural Illinois to my apartment in Indianapolis.
That, in and of itself, has been a rollercoaster. As I was fully unprepared to support five people one of whom has a serious medical condition I have been struggling to ensure they have everything they need. Since January 21st, Ebony has been hospitalized due to unknown infections, kidney injury, Lupus, and other autoimmune conditions. She has undergone dialysis, multiple scans, and extensive bloodwork.
Ebony has faced many challenges, many of which, ironically, have occurred within the medical field. My mother has been a nurse for over two decades and has always treated her profession with the utmost respect and compassion for the people she helped. However, during her time as a patient rather than a caregiver, she and our family have received heartbreaking treatment from “medical professionals.”
The final straw for her involved my brother, Ahkil. He is a Type 1 diabetic and has been since he was 20 months old now 10. He recently experienced negligent care from a nurse at his school.
