The story of Bakers Dozen began 45 years ago, in 1972 whe
n as a recently returned LDS missionary and also a newly - wed husband, Randy Jensen, our founder took a job at the Buttrey’s grocery store Bakery on First Street in Idaho Falls, Idaho. There Randy entered the apprenticeship program to become a Journeyman Baker under the guidance and direction of two ancient and original bakers, Ty Barker and Ray Quinton. Randy developed skills in every step of scratch-baking and producing everything from spudnut and cake donuts, to breads of all types, sizes and shapes, to pies, dinner rolls and wedding cakes, cookies, pastries and novelties. Randy’s career took him to 17th street IGA grocery, Fred Meyers bakery manager as well as 20 years bakery owner inside Smith’s Food King on Woodruff, the Ridley’s Bakery in Pocatello and as the genius behind the hand mixed and made bagels at Bagels & Cream in Idaho Falls. 33 years later, in September of 2005 now a Master Baker, Randy began a new adventure in his own bakery…The Baker’s Dozen, in a little shop at 561 S. Woodruff Ave, in Idaho Falls, Idaho. Now years later, Baker’s Dozen has grown into what you see today, a premier specialty bakery in Idaho Falls where every holiday is a tradition, where donut connoisseurs order ahead and many folks considering Baker’s Dozen a destination. The great success of Baker’s Dozen is due to the hard work, skills and quality Randy has given to the bakery. In April of 2021 Randy passed away suddenly and unexpectedly, leaving the community saddened at the loss of a strong member not only of the baking industry but also the community. For the next year the bakery remained closed until a new owner could be found. Now the bakery has reopened with the help of Randy’s assistant baker Vanessa, who under Randy’s tutelage learned to do things the old fashioned way, sometimes working together 16 hours a day. With Randy gone we have some big shoes to fill, but we as a bakery are committed to making the same great donuts the old-fashioned way. We look forward to working and serving our community with baked goods made from scratch, enjoying friendships old and new, and all the yearly traditions we all look forward to throughout the coming years!
