✨ On 9/25, there may be no better reason to turn up Dolly Parton and celebrate everything she stood for. ✨

“9 to 5” was catchy, funny and unmistakably Dolly, but underneath all of that was something very real. It was a song about hardworking people. About showing up, doing your best, wanting to be valued and believing that your dreams could be bigger than your circumstances.

That message feels especially meaningful this year.

Dolly Parton spent her life proving that where you start does not have to determine where you finish. She dreamed big, took chances on herself and never seemed interested in becoming anyone other than exactly who she was. And as her success grew, so did her generosity.

She gave books to children. She supported communities. She helped people without needing to make herself the center of the story. She made people laugh, made people feel seen and reminded generations that kindness and ambition can absolutely live in the same person.

Her life left us with some pretty wonderful reminders:

💗 Believe in yourself, even before everyone else does.
✨ Be unmistakably yourself.
🌱 Never be ashamed of where you came from.
🤍 Choose kindness whenever you can.
📚 Use what you have to open doors for someone else.
🌟 Take the chance. Chase the dream. Do some good along the way.
💎 And leave a little sparkle wherever you go.

So today, on 9/25, turn up a little 9 to 5 and remember the woman behind it.

Dolly’s greatest legacy may not be any one song, movie, award or rhinestone-covered outfit. It may simply be the example she gave us of what can happen when you believe in yourself fiercely, care about other people deeply, work hard for what you want and remember to reach back and help someone else along the way.

Happy 9/25. Here’s to Dolly, and to all the hardworking dreamers she spent a lifetime cheering for. 💗✨

🧀 It’s National Queso Day, y’all! 🌶️

And in Texas, we feel like queso deserves to be taken very seriously. 😂

So we want to hear from you:

🧀 Yellow or white queso?
🌶️ Mild, spicy or bring the heat?
🥩 Plain and simple, or loaded with taco meat, brisket, or chorizo?
👩‍🍳 Have a homemade queso recipe your family swears by?

And most importantly…

📍 Which local Mexican or Tex-Mex restaurant has the BEST queso?

Give your favorite neighborhood spot some love in the comments! Bonus points if you tell us what makes their queso so good. 👇

Twenty-five years ago today, our country experienced a day that changed us forever.

For many, September 11, 2001 is still remembered in vivid detail — where we were, who we were with, and the disbelief we felt as the events of that morning unfolded. For a younger generation, 9/11 is history they have learned from the stories of parents, grandparents, teachers and those who lived through it.

Today, we remember the nearly 3,000 lives lost. We honor the firefighters, police officers, first responders and ordinary people who ran toward danger to help others. And we remember the families whose lives were forever changed.

But 25 years later, we also remember something else: how people showed up for one another.

Neighbors helped neighbors. Strangers became friends. Communities gathered. In the midst of unimaginable heartbreak, there were extraordinary acts of courage, kindness and humanity.

That spirit of looking out for one another is worth carrying forward — not just today, but in the way we care for our neighbors and our communities every day.

On this 25th anniversary of September 11, we remember those we lost, honor those who served and sacrificed, and remain grateful for the countless acts of courage and compassion that showed us the very best of humanity.

We will never forget. 🇺🇸

It’s hard to believe Hurricane Harvey was nine years ago.

For so many across the Greater Houston area, the memories are still vivid—not only of the devastation, but of neighbors helping neighbors, strangers becoming rescuers, first responders working around the clock, and communities showing up for one another in extraordinary ways. 🦸‍♂️

As we reflect on Harvey today, we’d love to hear the moments that have stayed with you.

What acts of courage, kindness or selflessness did you witness—or take part in—during the rescue and recovery? Who stepped up when your neighborhood needed them most?

Share your memories in the comments. 👇

Today, we remember the lives lost while also recognizing the countless acts of service, compassion and resilience that helped carry our communities through. 💕

This Saturday, HOA board members from across Greater Houston will come together for a day centered on stronger neighborhoods, better connections and practical information they can bring back to the communities they serve.

The HOA Connect Houston Leadership Summit is happening THIS Saturday, August 15, and there is still time for HOA board members to register.

At My Neighborhood News, we see every day how much local leadership matters. HOA board members often volunteer countless hours making decisions that directly impact their neighbors, and this Summit is designed to give them a place to connect with fellow board members, ask questions, hear from trusted industry professionals and engage with local government and community partners.

✨ HOA board members: Bring your questions, your experiences and your ideas. Come meet others serving communities across Greater Houston and leave with useful information, new relationships and resources to help you lead more effectively. Please register so we can plan for food.

🤩 There will also be prizes, including an Apple Watch and a seat on an exclusive holiday light tour to see the most spectacular displays across town!

We’re grateful to the vendor partners helping make this event possible, including Blue Stream Fiber, SBB Management Company, Katy Brothers Pressure Washing, The Perfect Light, ENG Roofing , Converged Services, Go Painting of Houston North, Rothberg Specialty, Reserve Advisors, LLC, AT&T, Capital Bank, Hardeman Landscaping, The Amenity Collective, Axis HOA Maintenance & Development LLC, Yellowstone Landscape, and All Aquatics Kids Playgrounds,LLC.

It’s a natural extension of what both My Neighborhood News and HOA Connect Houston work toward every day: supporting the people who serve our neighborhoods through education, networking, practical guidance and consistent outreach.

From our partners at HOA Connect Houston:

We are thrilled to have Amy Hoechstetter, PCAM, AMS, CMCA, VP of SBB Management Company, participate as an industry expert on a live panel at the upcoming HOA Connect Houston Leadership Summit. 👏

With more than 17 years of community management experience, Amy brings a people-first perspective to leadership that has shaped her career and the relationships she has built along the way.

As Vice President of SBB Management Company, Amy has worked alongside boards, developers, community managers, business partners, and volunteers across a wide range of communities, always believing that strong leadership begins with seeing the person before the position.

At the HOA Connect Houston Leadership Summit, Amy will bring that experience to the live panel, sharing insights grounded in trust, mutual respect, and a genuine understanding of the people who make communities work.

We are honored to have her contribute to what we know will be a valuable discussion.

If you are an HOA board member or know someone who is, here’s the registration link:

⚠️ Heat Advisory in Effect ⚠️

The US National Weather Service Houston-Galveston Texas is warning that dangerous heat is returning, with heat index values expected to reach 107°F–114°F today and continue through the weekend. A Heat Advisory is in effect as hot temperatures combine with high humidity across the region.

With little overnight relief and prolonged exposure increasing the risk of heat-related illness, residents are encouraged to take extra precautions:

☀️ Stay hydrated — Drink plenty of water, even if you don’t feel thirsty.
☀️ Limit outdoor activities between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. when possible.
☀️ Wear lightweight, light-colored clothing and use sunscreen.
☀️ Take frequent breaks in air-conditioned spaces or the shade.
☀️ Check on elderly neighbors, young children, and pets.
☀️ Never leave people or pets in a parked vehicle, even for a short time.

Heat can become dangerous quickly. Know the signs of heat exhaustion and heat stroke, and seek medical attention if symptoms become severe.
