SARAH GRACE'S BAKERY & MARKET is a locally owned and operated bakery, coffee shop and market in the Lake Gaston, NC area. We specialize in daily made from scratch sweets just like our grandmothers--Grandma SARAH Frances Salmon and Grandma Amanda GRACE Essex Sellers--used to make. Although these sweet loving women aren't with us any longer, we hope to honor them by sharing with you some old fashion

ed goodness made with recipes of theirs. We'll also be sharing some new sweets simply inspired by wanting to offer you fresh, local, small batch bakery goods. If you're ever passing through our part of the beautiful Lake Gaston Area of NC, stop by to say hello and have a great cup of locally roasted coffee with whatever sweet treat may soon become your new favorite and see how "life is SWEETER at the lake!!!"

It’s been about 3 months since I closed the bakery and a day hasn’t gone by that I haven’t thought about it multiple times throughout each day. This includes the 19 years of dreaming about opening my own bakery, the two years the bakery was open and all of the wonderful customers here at Lake Gaston and beyond that supported me and the bakery. It took me until last night to FINALLY bring myself to read all the incredibly kind and supportive comments, messages and texts that so many people had left for me. I’m sorry I haven’t responded, but I promise I will be doing so this weekend to each of you.😊

Because so many of you have reached out to me asking if I would bake some of the signature things you loved getting from the bakery, that you could come pick up from me or have me ship to you and because I miss baking so much, I’M GOING TO BE OPENING THE BAKERY BACK UP AS A POP-UP BAKERY ONLY TWO WEEKENDS A MONTH BEGINNING MEMORIAL DAY WEEKEND, MAY 23rd.

I’m still in the process of figuring out all the legalities and details of doing this which include, finding a certified kitchen to bake from in order to have a health inspection, business/operating permits, renewing my business license, insurance, taxes and a location. Also, I’ll need to find out what guidelines and restrictions might still be in place because of COVID-19. If anyone knows of a certified kitchen in the Littleton area that I can rent on an hourly or daily basis, please let me know.

Another huge reason I want to do this is because some of you may remember that I had hoped to donate leftover items to local charities and I was never able to do that. After watching a show last night on tv that aired to raise awareness and money for Feeding America which is the nation’s largest domestic hunger-relief organization, I knew exactly what I had to do!!! It was a reunion special of one of my favorite tv shows, Parks & Recreation and it helped me to make my decision about baking again. I’ll be partnering with Feeding America to donate a portion of the money brought in from the pop-ups each month. My goal will be to donate $700 per month. According to their website......
“Raising and donating $700 to your local food bank would translate to 2100 meals.” and I can’t think of a better way to spend $700!!! I have said many times that if I won the lottery, I’d still have my bakery and just give everything away for free. Not a great business model I know, but it’s the truth!!!😊

So stay tuned to Facebook and also look for my new Instagram as I’ll be posting regularly over the next few weeks. Take a look at what I’ll definitely be baking again in the pictures that follow. And lastly to quote mine and Rod’s two favorite characters from Parks & Rec........

Ron: “I don’t have the materials for s’mores.”
Leslie: “I do. I always carry emergency s’mores rations in my car.”

Or SCONES rations in mine!!!😆

Julia Child said.....”People who love to eat are always the best people.”

I believe people who love to eat SWEETS are always the best people of ALL!!!

So this includes ALL Y’ALL who have supported us over the last couple of years!!! It’s been such a pleasure getting to know everyone and share my love of baking sweets (and the country ham scone😊) with you. It truly has been the time of my life!!!

With a heavy heart though I must tell you that Rod and I have closed the bakery. Over the last six months it had become increasingly hard financially to keep the bakery open—the business was just not viable at the lake or I just wasn’t a very good small business owner. I often said that if I won the lottery I would still have the bakery but just give everything away. That’s exactly what my Grandma Salmon would have done I know!!!😊 I had also shared with many of you the frustrations with us not having a distributor to deliver ingredients and supplies, only having one oven and a small freezer, no budget for advertising and possibly the location itself. It was probably a combination of all the above and the clock finally ran out on us a couple of weeks ago. We had to make a tough decision. We could continue to literally lose money every day we were open or close and I find a job and we start to get back on our feet financially. I didn’t open the bakery thinking I would ever become a millionaire or even a “thousandaire” but I opened it thinking it would be self sufficient. It unfortunately never was.

There are so many folks to thank for helping me to realize a lifelong dream of mine of owning a bakery—family, friends, the young ladies who worked with me, customers, customers who became friends, and other small business owners at the lake and beyond. I can’t name everyone here, but please know you each touched my heart and made me feel like I was doing something special and what I was meant to be doing—even on my worst days with all my back problems and on the days where I worked 37 hours straight without leaving the bakery. It was definitely all worth it to see the smiles on your faces. Thank you for all your suggestions, Facebook posts, kindness, encouragement, friendship and again just all the amazing support!!!

I wish for everyone good health, happiness, fun and safe times at Lake Gaston and a life filled with sweetness!!! XOXOXOXOXOX
