If you come in tomorrow for grab ’n go or to pick up your preorder and find my space looking a little chaotic, just know there is a method to the madness.

When someone offers to come over and mud drywall for you, you immediately abandon whatever plans you had and work around their schedule.

Because mudding is the worst job in construction.

Actually, sanding the mud is the worst job in construction. Mudding is a close second.

So today the bakery temporarily transformed into a construction zone. There is dust where there shouldn’t be dust, tools where there shouldn’t be tools, and projects happening in places that were perfectly fine five minutes ago.

But we’re making progress, and progress is worth a little mess. The bakery kitchen is getting closer every day, and I couldn’t be more excited.

Also, if anyone would like to volunteer for mudding or sanding duties during the month of June, which is my goal for getting this part finished, please raise your hand. 🙋🏻‍♀️

Compensation may include bread.

Possibly a lot of bread.

In fact, if you’re the kind of person who genuinely enjoys sanding drywall, I am prepared to discuss a compensation package consisting almost entirely of sourdough for the remainder of the year.

Definitely, not kidding. 📞 🙏

What is it about banana bread?

It’s not fancy. It’s not complicated. Yet somehow it feels like home. Maybe it’s the smell that fills the kitchen. Maybe it’s because almost everyone has a memory attached to it. A grandmother’s recipe, an after-school snack, a way to rescue overripe bananas from the counter.

Whatever the reason, banana bread has a way of making people slow down and cut “just one slice” that somehow turns into two.

These cute little mini loaves are coated with raw sugar, cinnamon, and ground banana chips before baking. The result is a lightly crisp, flavorful crust wrapped around a soft, moist loaf.

And because I can’t help myself, it’s made with organic flour and has been long fermented through the sourdough process. The fermentation adds flavor and all the benefits that come from giving dough the time it needs to do its thing.

We did no nuts in this batch. That’s how I like my banana bread. Are you team nuts or no nuts??

Adventures in homesteading with two old people who barely know what they’re doing. 😅

Earlier today, Eric and I were both staring out different windows while talking on the phone. He was upstairs. I was downstairs.

There was an animal out in the yard.

We discussed at length what kind of animal it could be. It clearly wasn’t okay because it hadn’t moved the entire time we’d been watching it. We debated several possibilities and then moved on to trying to figure out how it got there in the first place.

After a good amount of concern and speculation, I decided it was time to go outside and investigate.

It was a potted plant.

That’s it. That’s the story.

Two grown adults, both wearing glasses, spent a considerable amount of time trying to identify a distressed houseplant from inside the house. 😅

The good news is the plant survived. The bad news is we may need stronger prescriptions.

The girls were 🔥 today! They prepped 144 chocolate chip cookies, 40 pizza shells, peeled 5 lbs of bananas and started a recipe test for a long fermented banana bread while I was out running errands in the most inefficient way possible.

My very sweet and kind future daughter-in-law, though she is really so much more than that, sent me this precious water bottle.

Usually I’m stealing somebody else’s random water bottle around the house or rescuing one from Goodwill, so this feels like a pretty big upgrade. 😅

I feel so fancy now I may have to drink my water with my pinky held high.

My day started with a 1:00am alarm.

Time to bake for the event at Sabbathday Lake Shaker Village. Rain had poured all night and the forecast for the rest of the day looked just as bad. There was a very logical part of me saying, “Maybe scale back. Maybe bake less.”

That would have been wise.

Instead, I kept going. I had already made the dough, so my options were to bake it, toss it, or donate it. So I baked. Oddly at peace with baking what seemed so obviously to be too much.

Pack the truck in the rain. Set up the booth in the rain. Event starts at 10am… rain.

Ugh.

The day started slow. Surprisingly, people still came out. Not huge crowds, but enough to remind me how much small businesses and vendors appreciate the people who show up anyway.

By noon, I had not sold much bread. I was discouraged. I was running on very little sleep and had put a lot into preparing for this one. I brought 123 loaves, 66 cookies, and 18 coffee cakes.

Then the rain stopped.

People started coming.

The sun came out and we all started drying off and warming up.

Then… they came.

Friends. Regular customers. People who follow along online and were excited to finally grab a loaf. New faces excited to see the new bakery. And it just kept coming.

By 3:30, I had 9 loaves left.

I started packaging them up to donate to volunteers and then… one more customer walked over.

One more loaf sold.

And I was so busy through all of it that I didn’t take a single photo. (I borrowed this one from their page). 😅

I drove home exhausted and grateful. Thank you to every person who came out today. Thank you to the volunteers and staff at the Village for putting on such a lovely and organized event.

What time did I wake up to bake for you???? Well, since you asked….

1am!!

So, get over here to Sabbathday Lake Shaker Village and come see me and all the other vendors that worked so hard to make it here today and didn’t let a little rain deter them. The baby animal snuggle stations have been moved indoors in the barn. You really don’t want to miss that!

The rain is going to stop soon. It will be worth the visit, I promise!

Teacher gift idea 💛

The end of the school year always sneaks up fast, and finding something thoughtful for teachers can feel harder than it should be. Teachers spend months pouring into our kids with patience and encouragement.

I put together some small gift baskets that include a gift card for a loaf of bread of their choice. A simple way to say thank you and give them something they can actually enjoy.

I’ll have a limited number available, so grab one while they last.

Really looking forward to being at Sabbathday Lake Shaker Village for Spring Fest with Baby Animals on Monday. Last year when I was there in Oct, I sold out in 2 hours! I am bringing extra this time so hoping I don't sell out too soon. It was fun but a bummer to turn so many away afterward! Come see me and snuggle with all the baby animals.
