Staff of Life Bread Staff of Life Bread Company is an artisanal baking company specializing in European style breads.

We are a production-only bakery, and we sell our breads at farmers markets in Harrisonburg and Leesburg, Virginia. We also offer them at the Friendly City Food Co-op, 150 Wolfe St. and JMU's Grace Street Market at the Student Success Center in Harrisonburg, Virginia.

As I continue to wait for the end of construction, I was fortunate to take up an invitation to visit Deep Roots Milling at Woodsons Mill in Nelson County, VA. They are the last operational water mill in Virginia providing local grain producers stone milling once a month, eleven times a year. Thank-you to Charlie Wade for arranging the visit and to Ian for showing me around and spearheading the start-up of this month's milling. 1800's technology still works!!

I was lucky enough to get some flour samples to start feeding up my mother starters and see how they work in recipes. Will they be cost prohibitive?

This may be an issue, I won't lie. Land suitable for grain growing in Virginia is extremely expensive, and is mostly used for feed grain production not for human food chains. But the opportunity to use the freshest locally grown flour, whole grain, no additives or preservatives? I've got to try.

I really can't wait to get started testing new flours and new equipment in my new space!
