Does Anyone Around Here Still Grow Field Corn?
We're in our third year of growing and saving seed from our own patch of heirloom and Native American field corn, and I'd love to hear from others in the area who are doing the same.
Does anyone still grow field corn and save seed from year to year? Do you know someone who does? Would anyone be interested in starting a patch of their own?
I'd also love to find more folks who still mill their own corn or take it to a local mill to be ground into cornmeal and grits.
This was once an ordinary part of life in our area. My grandfather told me about taking their corn to the local grist mill, which was owned by his maternal grandfather. I'm sure some of you have similar memories.
Did your family grow corn for meal? Where did you take it to be ground? Do you remember what kind of corn you grew?
I'd love to see a community of local people growing field corn again, saving our own seed, sharing what works, and coming together to make our own cornmeal.
It's food, but it's also part of our cultural heritage worth keeping alive.
