🍪🥖 LET’S TALK ABOUT COTTAGE BAKERY PRICES… 🌿❤️
Every now and then, I hear someone ask:
“Why are homemade cottage bakery prices sometimes higher than what I can buy at the grocery store?”
And honestly… that’s a GREAT question! So let’s talk about it. 😊
First of all…
Have you seen grocery prices lately?! 😳😂 (not to mention gas, electricity, etc)
The cost of food and ingredients has been steadily increasing, and small cottage bakers are feeling that increase just like everyone else.
Flour.
Butter.
Eggs.
Sugar.
Chocolate.
Cheese.
Cream cheese.
Spices.
Packaging supplies.
When our ingredient costs go up, we feel it, too.
And there’s something else that is easy to overlook…
🛒 WE DON'T BUY INGREDIENTS LIKE THE BIG CHAINS DO.
A large commercial bakery or grocery chain can purchase ingredients in enormous quantities—sometimes by the pallet, truckload or through huge wholesale contracts.
That gives them buying power that a small cottage bakery simply doesn't have.
I'm purchasing ingredients in quantities appropriate for a small-batch business, and I'm paying many of those same rising retail or small-business supply costs that YOU are seeing.
BUT…
when you purchase from a cottage baker, you're also getting something very different from a mass-produced grocery-store product.
🌿 YOU'RE GETTING FRESH, SMALL-BATCH, HOMEMADE GOODNESS.
Our products are made in small batches with ingredients carefully chosen and recipes we have worked hard to develop and perfect. 🥰
I don't have to formulate everything around sitting on a grocery-store shelf for weeks or months…and add toxic chemicals to keep them from breaking down…like REAL food is meant to.
I avoid unnecessary preservatives, artificial additives and other ingredients that are often used in commercially produced foods to extend shelf life or maintain consistency.
Freshness matters. ❤️
✨ AND THEN THERE'S
CUSTOMIZATION!
This is one of my FAVORITE things about being a small cottage baker!
A grocery-store shelf can only offer you what is sitting there.
With a cottage baker, you can often say:
“Could you make this in a different flavor?”
“Can I get a smaller size?”
“Could you make this without ___?”
“Can I order this for a special occasion?”
“Do you have something that would work for my family?”
And I can actually have a conversation with you about it! ❤️
That's something a huge commercial bakery simply can't provide in the same personal way.
🏡 AND YOU KNOW WHO MADE YOUR FOOD.
When you buy from Roots & Restoration Homestead, you're not buying from a faceless corporation.
You're supporting a real person, a real family and a real small business.
There is a LOT that happens behind every loaf, cookie, scone or sweet treat that you don't necessarily see:
🛒 Ingredient sourcing
🥣 Measuring & mixing
🍪 Shaping & portioning
🔥 Baking
❄️ Cooling
🎨 Decorating & finishing
📦 Packaging
🏷️ Labeling
🧼 Cleaning & sanitizing
💡 Utilities
🧰 Equipment & supplies
📱 Taking orders & communicating with customers
❤️ And countless hours of work, experience, and care…
So, when you compare a homemade cottage bakery product to something mass-produced at the grocery store, you're not necessarily comparing the same product or the same experience.
You're comparing:
🌿 Small-batch vs. mass production
🍪 Handmade vs. factory made
🥖 Fresh vs. extended shelf life
✨ Customized vs. one-size-fits-all
🏡 Local family business vs. large corporation
And please know…
❤️ I AM ALWAYS TRYING TO GIVE YOU THE BEST QUALITY FOR THE FAIREST PRICE I POSSIBLY CAN.
👀I watch ingredient costs.
🛒I shop around.
💫I look for ways to keep my overhead manageable.
🧮 I carefully calculate my pricing.
Because I want you to be able to enjoy these goodies without feeling like you're being taken advantage of.
At the same time, I have to make sure I'm charging enough to actually cover the cost of making them and allow this little business to continue growing.
I can't compete with a giant corporation on price.
But I CAN compete on:
🌿 Quality
❤️ Freshness
🥖 Homemade craftsmanship
✨ Personalization
🤝 Customer service
🏡 Community
…and, of course…
😋 TASTE!!!
ALSO, you can many times save by preordering larger quantities 😉
So, the next time you see a homemade bakery item and think,
“That's more than the grocery store…”
I hope you'll remember that you're not simply paying for the ingredients.
You're supporting the time, skill, care and small business behind them.
And when you shop small, your purchase means so much more than a transaction.
It helps a family. 🧑🧑🧒🧒
It supports a dream. 💭
It keeps local businesses going. 👩🍳
And it helps preserve something I believe is worth preserving:
HOMEMADE TRADITIONS. ❤️
Every loaf.
Every cookie.
Every preorder.
Every share.
Every recommendation.
IT MATTERS.
So from my kitchen to your table…
THANK YOU for choosing homemade. 🥹❤️
Thank you for choosing local.
And thank you for supporting Roots & Restoration Homestead. 🌿
I'm committed to giving you the best quality products at the fairest prices I can, while continuing to build something that is rooted in faith, family, homemade traditions and community.
And THAT is something I am incredibly grateful for. ❤️
