I don’t remember when I first started baking, but I remember that I loved it.
2) Because the kitchen is a fun place to be (if you don’t HAVE to be there), and
3) Because you got to create.
I can’t think of myself as much of a creative person (I’m a registered nurse, #sciencerules) but there’s something that’s in our DNA as humans that craves to create something out of nothing.
I remember Pinterest opening my eyes to the DIY insanity that food and baking had to offer.
I remember in high school having a friend go through a breakup and beginning a tradition of making cookie-dough brownies AKA “Breakup Brownies.” I remember just wanting to bake if I could find a reason to: school projects, birthdays for friends, gatherings, for my family, for holidays, etc.
I remember missing being in a kitchen my first year of college. I remember using my older sister’s kitchen as a substitute when I could.
It took until my sophomore year of college to really realize I’d been bit by the baking-bug. I wish I had counted the amount of cakes and M&M cookies I made that year. With happy friends and roommates to eat what I baked, I just baked and baked and baked and baked. I still joke to this day that I got my boyfriend (NOW HUSBAND) through my pumpkin cake.
By my junior year of college, my dreamer (and fellow baker) of a roommate decided that our loaves of Sweet and Sourdough Bread could and should be sold. I was skeptical and unsure, but her persistance was strong and I went with it . . . and I loved it.
Being able to use something that I loved and was able to create with my own two hands to brighten someone’s day is an insane blessing. At this point I’ve baked for birthday’s, engagement parties, holiday gatherings, office parties, gifts, and weddings! Though my business is still little, my oh my, how blessed I am to have it grow as it has!
Right now I’m full-time RN and a part-time baker (currently mostly for my husband). Baking serves as an outlet for stress and creativity and I can’t wait to give to you the thing that gives so much to me-- an amazing baked good.
