Originally established by presidential proclamation President John F. Kennedy in 1962, National Police Week includes Peace Officers Memorial Day on May 15th and a week of observances recognizing officers who given their lives in the line of duty, as well as those who continue to serve and protect our communities with dedication and courage.

On this Peace Officer Memorial Day, we pause to remember the brave officers who gave their lives serving and protecting our community, and we honor the families who continue to carry the weight of that sacrifice each and every day. We will never forget.

Captain Malcolm E. Grass
End of Watch: 5/8/1986

Corporal Dannie R. Garrison
End of Watch: 1/1/2000

Patrolman William E. Phillips, III
End of Watch: 9/30/2010

These men answered the call to serve others with courage, dedication, and honor. Their sacrifice will forever remain a part of the history of Hancock County and the law enforcement profession.

Today, we also extend our deepest gratitude to the men and women who continue to put on the badge and serve our communities with professionalism and selflessness. Thank you for your commitment, your sacrifice, and your willingness to stand watch for others.

Please keep all fallen officers, their families, and those still serving in your thoughts and prayers today and every day.

Today we pause to remember a husband, father, and friend whose sacrifice will never be forgotten. His courage, service, and dedication to protecting others will forever live on in our hearts.

On May 8th, 1986, while serving as Chief Deputy for the Hancock County Sheriff’s Office, Captain Grass was assisting the FBI with an extortion case. He was shot and killed in the line of duty while apprehending the suspect involved in that case.

Captain Grass was 43 years old and had 14 years of service. He left behind his wife and two sons.

He is forever remembered, especially on this date and as we continue to honor him in our newest building, located on Malcolm Grass Way in Greenfield Indiana. A street named proudly designated in his honor.
