FOOD DIARY: My mum’s friend mentioned that the Ang Ku Kueh from this shop in Kuching is good and we finally got to try it. I bought all 3 flavours: mung bean, peanut and coconut. All three were delicious. The rice wrapper was so soft and chewy 💕 Can’t wait to come back to Nevada County and make these again for you. 😘 Hope everyone is doing well! Miss you all! FOOD DIARY: I had to pick up some kuih on our last day in Penang. Kuih is a Malaysian dessert snack and refers to little bite sized ‘cakes’ which tend to be made with rice, tapioca, pandan, gula melaka and coconut milk (santan). They are such a rare find outside south east Asia unlike other Asian desserts such as mochi, boba, egg tarts, sago pudding etc. This is why I hand make them in Grass Valley California. It’s a taste of home away from home 💕 These kuihs are from a shop in Penang that has been making and selling these delicacies since the 1930s. The kuihs were delicious with my favorites being the huat kueh (sweet white rice sugar cake) and the kuih bingka (coconut tapioca cake). The seating area upstairs has a small gallery full of amazing kuih moulds, kebayas (traditional nyonya dress) and embroidery.

MALAYSIA FOOD DIARY: I was craving for something sweet today. This is called QQ Ice on the menu at a shop called Jelly Beancurd in Kuching, Sarawak. It is boba, tang yuan and sweet yam on shaved ice flavored with evaporated milk. Absolute heaven. I’m definitely going to make this for myself when I get home to Grass Valley. (Sorry I won’t be able to sell something like this from my home bakery. Cottage food permits are very restrictive in our county with what we can and can’t make)

Nian gao/Kuih bakul is the classic lunar new year cake but of course there’s always a Malaysian twist to it. I steep pandan leaves in the batter for extra fragrance. There are only a handful of ingredients in this cake: Rice flour, sugar, water and oil. It takes about 5 hours to cook and is naturally gluten and dairy free.

Kuih mangkuk translates to bowl cake. This is the Asian equivalent of a muffin. This cake is so fragrant from the pandan and coconut milk and is also naturally dairy free. The cake texture is moist and soft similar to a fluffy banana bread. Not too sweet and eaten simply as is without frosting.

I am so excited to make these special treats for my Gold Lantern Baking customers as a way to say thank you for your continued support. It is also my farewell before I take a break for a few months starting the end of Feb. I will miss you all. Please stay in touch and last but not least Xin Nian Kwai Le and Gong Xi Fa Cai!
