"I prayed for her every day telling her to be careful. She said she was safe. We never expected that anything would happen to her."

Today we honor Private First Class Karina Sotelo Lau, U.S. Army.

Private First Class Lau was an outstanding student and played over a dozen instruments. She would have been the first person in her family to graduate from a four-year university had she completed the four-year program for which she received a scholarship for academics and music. Two months into the program, however, Lau decided she needed to fulfill greater responsibilities and enlisted in the Army.

Private First Class Lau graduated basic training in Fort Jackson, South Carolina, and communications training in Fort Gordon, Georgia, at the top of her class.

On November 2nd, 2003, Lau at age 20, and 15 other service members were killed by a shoulder-fired missile that shot down the CH-47 Chinook transport helicopter they were riding in.

"I prayed for her every day telling her to be careful," said Private First Class Lau’s mother Ruth. "She said she was safe. We never expected that anything would happen to her."

Private First Class Lau aspired to one day go back to school and open a music store after finishing her service.

We honor Private First Class Lau’s service and sacrifice.

The standard of American grit is forged by heroes like Pvt. Henry Johnson.

During World War I, this Harlem Hellfighter sustained 21 wounds while repelling a massive enemy raid in hand-to-hand combat to save a fellow soldier.

This Medal of Honor recipient exemplifies the resilience, lethality and unbreakable resolve required to win on the battlefield. We carry his legacy forward.

Sunday, June 7. A personal (to celebrate my 80th birthday) invitation to join the community and me to raise money to send Ft. Bragg and Camp Lejeune military family kids to YMCA Camp Hanes for a week of summer camp.

The YMCA & Camp Hanes organizations and I are co-hosting a special fundraiser to fund bringing military family kids from Camp Lejeune Ft. Bragg to Camp Hanes for a week of summer camp. This will be a life enhancing experience for these young boys and girls and a big thank you to their parents who are serving our country.

The event will be held on Sunday afternoon, June 7 at Incendiary Brewing in downtown Winston-Salem. We will have live Oldies music by “Penny Candy”, a raffle and silent auction as part of the effort. 100% of the money raised goes directly to the Y and Camp Hanes to support the children of military families. For each $500 raised we help can change the life of a military family child.

Our goal is to enhance the lives of 20 children. Flyer attached.
