Thanks to everyone who made the Dallas AVSA convention a huge success and thank you all who supported my sales! I think I sold out in record time and only wish I could've brought more plants.
It was an honor to have K's Ayla Ann win commercial best new cultivar, K's Amethyst Rose win commercial 2nd best new cultivar, and Sizzlin' Romance win commercial best in show. But when my 7 year old grandson won his first blue ribbon with Sim Sim Magic Bells, I couldn't be more proud. This was the apex of the show for me.
Ethan took care of his plant on his own with great diligence, watering on schedule, rotating it under the lights and disbudding until it was time to stop. It had perfect symmetry (until little sis broke a leaf, lol!), but it came into bloom nicely and he groomed it at entries like a pro.
I think he was overwhelmed, being this was his first show, but that smile says it all!

Here are my last two new introductions that I'll be selling at the AVSA convention in Dallas. The flower colors on these get more intense as the plant matures.
Within the next few days, I'll be posting a list of all the plants I'll have for sale at convention.

Passing it on.
I remember one of the first words my oldest grandson, Silas, would try to say was 'flower'. He and his younger brother, Ethan, would come into my violet room and just love to look at everything in bloom. Silas is now 9 and Ethan is 7, soon to be 8. They both have a wonderful interest in the natural world along with their two younger siblings. Ethan has especially turned into quite a good gardener. He soaks up everything you tell him and you should see what he can grow, both indoors and outside!
These pictures were from the first time that he really wanted to work with me in my violet room. He learned how to mix soil and fill pots. He practiced making 45 degree cuts on leaf stems and put a bunch of leaves down for me. He also carefully separated babies and potted them. He was awesome and quite the conversationalist too!
And he's even growing a couple of violets to show at convention this year! Although one suffered a bit of an accident, the other is looking beautiful, and Ethan is very excited about showing it in a few weeks. Keeping our fingers crossed!

I'm quite happy with where my hybridizing is going with this "watermark-edged" puff fantasy trait. I'm starting to get lots of it on the flowers now. It seems to show up in two different ways. One is where it takes it's time, barely showing up when the flower opens, but comes in full force about a week later. The top two pics demonstrate that. Same flower in both.
The other way is that it shows up right out of the gate as soon as the flower opens (second two pics). How long they last in both cases depends on if the main flower color darkens much. If it does, the watermarks blend in with it and they get lost in the background. This might happen as the flower ages.
The bottom two flowers are from the same seedling and are droppers, but will be crossed out on semi-double siblings and outcrossed on other similar flowers. By the way, neither parent of this cross had this type of puff fantasy, but a grandparent on one side did, and a great grandparent on the other side had watermarked thumbprints. Just goes to show how important those background genes are!

Here's a promising seedling (22-G) that's a full sibling to the seedling in the previous post (22-F). It loves to show off its blooms and shapes up nicely at 15" across.

I recently posted photos of a new seedling(22-F) in my profile picture. I don't usually provide comments with those pictures but I thought I'd give a quick rundown of what's going on with it along with including more pictures.
My main goal in doing this cross, which is now in its 2nd generation, is to create the boldest coral and purple colors as possible, adding in white for contrast. Each color is pretty evenly distributed in the flowers. In the process of trying to cram all of that in each flower, the coral, which always showed up as puff fantasy, started showing up as more than just that, as if it was trying to compete with the purple as the base color in some flowers. I consulted Jeff Smith on how the description should read, and after looking at both parents along with this seedling, he came up with: "purple/coral patches and puff fantasy, white puff fantasy" which covers it well.
Now, what's especially nice about these colors is that they don't fade. They go bland when the flowers finally become spent, but from the time the buds open up and until then, they just continue to get bolder and brighter. That's a characteristic that I really like! The one weakness in this seedling is the open foliage growth. It's not terrible but could definitely be better. I'm going to disbud, and after repotting, I'll place it closer to the lights and see if it responds. In the meantime, it will continue to be evaluated and the generations will hopefully prove to bloom true.

On rare occasion, the desirable traits from not only both parents, but from plants further back in the family tree, uniquely end up together in one charming little seedling. Yellow-green flowers with white puff fantasy and fuscia center/edges on dark green foliage. So far, not a single one if its siblings have come close to looking like it. She's potted up and on the evaluation shelf.

Commercial sales were a huge success at the AVSA convention in Kansas City and I wanted to thank all of you who supported me by purchasing my plants, helping me throughout the sale, and sharing your kind words with me. I appreciate all of you! 😊
