So the abrupt announcement I need to make is that I have sold the bakery to a long time customer who intends to keep the spirit of the bakery thriving and bring his own passion to its development. More info will be forthcoming as he is ready.
Please know this was a heartbreaking decision that I’ve been waffling back and forth on since we slowed things down in March. I’ve had enough time and space to admit what owning the bakery has cost my family, my physical health, and mental health. Without this virus giving me time and space to think, I probably would have kept stubbornly pushing through for far too long because I do love baking for this community, I love seeing your faces, and I adore the seasonal creative menu the staff has collaborated on! I also know that I can’t go back to the heavy workload that this community both deserves and demands.
Thank you endlessly for your support and enthusiasm as I’ve grown into this role the past 4 years. As far as what’s next for me, I have no plan other than to get through this year of elearning with my kids and try to take better care of myself. I love you all unspeakably.

08/17/2020

Hi all, I didn't open up any bread for preorders this week, but I'll have plenty of breads and sweets available for tomorrow night. Here's the plan: Oatmeal, Tyrolean Multigrain, Cheesy Sandwich Loaf, Baguettes, Sourdough Flaxseed Rye, Croissants, Chocolate Chip Cookies, Zucchini Walnut Cake with Cream Cheese Frosting, Brownies, Honey Cashew Granola.

08/06/2020

I am going to keep the bakery shut this next week as my family adjusts to elearning. May all you parents and educators and everyone involved with our school systems find some sort of calm and rhythm and peace in the decisions you had to make as school starts. There is no right choice except the one you made.

With the bakery having limited hours this summer, I have time and energy to get back to canning! Really grateful for an active farmers market, good relationships with the vendors there, and my grandma’s canning equipment. #goshenfarmersmarket #dillpickles #canningseason

Breads for next Tuesday can be ordered here: https://my-site-109950-108119.square.site/
I’m also planning on pastries, two types of granola, brownies with pecans and white chocolate, and some type of cake.
Again, many thanks to everyone who is adjusting to new schedules and needs. I know it’s stressful, and I appreciate it!

I have the site updated with breads on offer for next Tuesday. I'm planning on making twice the amount of pastries and sweets as yesterday. Pastries, peanut butter cookies filled with peanut butter buttercream, rhubarb crumble cake, and apple cinnamon walnut granola. Many thanks for preorders here: https://my-site-109950-108119.square.site

Market is open 3-7, here’s what I have available! Strawberry panna cotta, black currant jam bars, pastries, oatmeal bread, baguettes, walnut wheat berry sourdough, and one loaf of multigrain. Thanks to all who preordered, and remember, no mask=no service. Seriously.

Alright, slight change for this coming Tuesday. The bakery will be OPEN 3-7 along with the Farmers' Market for bread pick up (you can preorder here: https://my-site-109950-108119.square.site). Any extra bread will be available to purchase day-of, but if it sells out online, my shelves will be empty.
I'll also have some sweets available. I'm planning on a batch of croissants, peanut butter cookies, black currant jam bars, and strawberry panna cotta. Those items aren't available for preorder, as I'm not 100% what I'll get made.
What I'm expecting from you: Wear a mask. No exceptions. I will not sell you food if you are not wearing a mask. It's the least we can do for each other. Also, seating has been pushed to the back of the customer area. Please don't use the space as a meeting spot for your friends.
I love you all and am looking forward to seeing the smiles in your eyes...

This morning, I got to relax into being a shopper at the Goshen Farmer’s Market rather than being part of the bustle. I’m trying to enjoy this slow down season, even if it has too many unknowns.
I have bread for pick up on Tuesday available to order here: https://my-site-109950-108119.square.site/ and if my week comes together as I hope, I’ll have some chocolate croissants for Tuesday as well! Thanks.

05/21/2020

Good morning all,
I have next week's bread ordering available here: https://my-site-109950-108119.square.site
You all are helping keep the lights on, many thanks for everyone who has been ordering bread from me.
I've listed almond extract and vanilla bean paste this week- two of my baking staples. I still have plenty of flour and butter, and sourdough rye will be available for orders on Tuesday!

Alright folks, here’s some things. We will not be reopening before school is in session due to how my family-work balance needs to be. I am baking on Tuesdays and you can preorder bread, but this is a pick up situation only that Rachel The Wedge and Ida Mae Short are graciously handling for me. On Wednesdays, I am at the bakery and bread can also be picked up then. All orders need to go through this website, as I’m baking to order. If I only have 5 multigrains ordered, I’m adjusting my master recipe to make 5 loaves. Thank you all so much who are navigating this weird website/pickup/I don’t get to hear about your lives in meaningful ways situation.
Last, I have flour available for purchase again! I don’t know how often I’ll be able to do this, but I’m happy to when I can. I’ll be listing weird odds and ends that you might have fun baking with as my brain is capable... Order here: https://my-site-109950-108119.square.site/

Wednesday pickup, I will be at the bakery 9-2, and can bring your order out to your car.

Tuesday, Rachel The Wedge has graciously offered to distribute the bread orders, so no need to call. The Farmer's Market will be open from 3-7 Tuesday evening, so you can get all your local foods that evening.

Ok, I have more ingredients in stock! They can be ordered here: https://my-site-109950-108119.square.site/
Pickup is next Wednesday 9-2. This way everything has sat for a week without anyone touching it. Unfortunately neither of my suppliers has yeast currently, and getting smaller bags of flour means the price goes way up. I did portion out some 5# bags though and there is more sourdough starter available. It was lovely to see so many of your eyes this week.

04/16/2020

Ok, enough selling more baking! We have been making a loaf of banana bread every week since the schools closed and I’ve been home with my kids. I feel like that is a cliche, but here’s my recipe for ultimate comfort food:
In a large bowl, use a hand mixer to combine:
8 tablespoons butter, melted
1 cup brown sugar
2 large eggs
1/4 cup milk
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
3 medium bananas, very ripe (or pulled from the freezer and then microwaved. Be careful here, there is enough potassium in the stems to cause the microwave to arc occasionally!)
Blend until the bananas are as incorporated or chunky as you like. Then add:
2 cups all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon baking soda
1/4 teaspoon salt
1 t. cinnamon
1/2 cup chopped nuts
1/2 cup chocolate chips
Grease a loaf pan, (my mom always saved the paper wrapping the butter sticks in the fridge just for this purpose) pour batter in, bake at 350F for 1 hour, spinning halfway through. Let cool in pan for 10 minutes then turn out onto a cooling rack. Try to make it last the week. Fail miserably. Celebrate the fact that the kids have taught themselves how to use serrated knives safely.

04/16/2020

Hey all! Looks like most everything I had listed sold out overnight, and I think I have a good handle on organizing all the orders for next week. I am totally ok (energized even) with doing this again, so besides yeast and sourdough starter, can I get an idea of how many more bags of flour I should order? Do you need anything else (like 25# bag of sugar? Whole wheat flour? White chocolate chips? Dried fruit? Nuts?) I’m not trying to turn into a grocery store, as Maple City Market is doing an amazing job keeping this community supplied with local and organic foods... and they definitely are more organized than I am in this kind of regard, but you all are helping me hit minimum orders for delivery. Thanks so much everyone. I miss you, and organizing this is helping me find some purpose/pulling me out of weird head space.

Alright, online ordering is available here: https://my-site-109950-108119.square.site/ (it's a functional site, not a classy one!)
I'll be at the bakery all day Tuesday and most of the day Wednesday for you to pick up. If those days don't work for you, send me a message at [email protected] and we'll figure out something. Here's how pickup works: 1. place your order. 2. next Tuesday or Wednesday, pull into the parking lot behind the bakery/farmer's market 3. call the bakery at 574.534.0769 and tell me your name 3. pop your trunk 4. I will bring your order out and place it in your trunk, then wave a sad goodbye. 5. go home and bake.
Some notes:
I'm only selling the flour in 50# bags right now. If that is an intimidating amount of flour to you, split some with your neighbors. Or bake them something.
The coffee available is all from Equal Exchange: Congo Rising, Midnight Sun, Bird of Paradise, Love Buzz, Breakfast Blend. You can write me a message at the end of your order with your preference, but will mostly be first come, first choice. Again, bulk bags. Freeze it the extra or make new friends.
Yes, I'm charging a lot for a tiny amount of sourdough starter. No, I won't tell you how to use it. Rachel @rachel.thewedge has instructions on her website and in her cookbook. This starter has been going for at least 25 years at this point and we ran an experiment once where we didn't feed a sample of it for a year and it still came back to life. The stuff is magic. Please take care of it.
I miss baking for you all SO MUCH, but I've been very excited to see what creativity you all are baking with your heightened levels of time, axiousness, boredom etc. So bake, take pictures and tag the bakery @annasbread Have fun, get messy, make mistakes!

I heard people were having trouble finding flour lately... so my optimistic choice this week was to buy 1,500# of King Arthur all purpose Sir Galahad flour that I will be offering up for sale at cost to the community. I will be spending the weekend figuring out how to do online orders and figuring out exactly what I have to sell. Butter, yeast, chocolate chips, coffee beans, etc. Stay safe out there!

Update: the website for ordering is live, not classy, but functional: https://my-site-109950-108119.square.site/
