The Memory of Cal's Bakery

The Memory of Cal's Bakery Ascension Parish has undergone a lot of change since we were children back in the 70s and 80s, and now a big part of that time for us is going away.

Not affiliated with the actual Cal's Bakery.

Cal's Bakery opened in 1951 by Calvey “Cal” Bourque and his wife, Ruth, in Gonzales, La. Closed after 63 years in business.

I have to say that among the Gonzales area donuts I've tried after the demise of Cal's, the Daily Donut on Airline Highway seems to be the best. I think there are one or two I haven't gotten to yet though.

Today would be a great day for a good donut.

No donuts this week. Last week's experiment with Thee Heavenly Donut was not a success. I liked their non-donut products well enough, but the glazed donuts were dry and had an unpleasant texture. I'll try that one on Airline highway some time soon, but I haven't heard good things.

I went to Thee Heavenly Donut today. I can't say it was bad, but it wasn't good enough to get me to go back.

From today

01/30/2014

In honor of today's permanent closure:

O Captain! my Captain! our fearful trip is done,
The ship has weather’d every rack, the prize we sought is won,
The port is near, the bells I hear, the people all exulting,
While follow eyes the steady keel, the vessel grim and daring;
But O heart! heart! heart!
O the bleeding drops of red,
Where on the deck my Captain lies,
Fallen cold and dead.

O Captain! my Captain! rise up and hear the bells;
Rise up—for you the flag is flung—for you the bugle trills,
For you bouquets and ribbon’d wreaths—for you the shores a-crowding,
For you they call, the swaying mass, their eager faces turning;
Here Captain! dear father!
The arm beneath your head!
It is some dream that on the deck,
You’ve fallen cold and dead.

My Captain does not answer, his lips are pale and still,
My father does not feel my arm, he has no pulse nor will,
The ship is anchor’d safe and sound, its voyage closed and done,
From fearful trip the victor ship comes in with object won;
Exult O shores, and ring O bells!
But I with mournful tread,
Walk the deck my Captain lies,
Fallen cold and dead.

More expressing of feelings through the songs of others:

What have I become
My sweetest friend
Everyone I know
goes away
In the end
And you could have it all
My empire of dirt
I will let you down
I will make you hurt

A wonderful performance of Johnny Cash, maybe the last before he died in 2003. The video for the song is generally recognized as "his epitaph".

Unfortunately, one is not allowed to play chess for the life of a bakery.

Here's the classic clip from The Seventh Seal which I translated for people who doesn't understand Swedish. Enjoy. (I'm sorry if some subtitles are too quick...
